Electronica StylesSometimes it seems like there is a style of electronica for every day of the year. March 21st? It's French Ambient Techno day! Unfortunately, with so many of these sub-genres, they are either too specific or too vague for them to be of much use. The names may sound good, but nobody really seems to know what they mean. Fortunately, most listeners can recognize certain features of the major electronica styles. Here is a guide to some of the more popular styles of electronic music. Ambient Music1/9/2004Starting in 1978, Brian Eno started creating music that would support reflection and thinking. He did this by making music that was beautiful, but that did not demand your attention. With Music for Airports, Eno created a new style of music, ambient. Dark Ambient Music1/26/2004Dark ambient music explores the experimental fringes of ambient music, often using ambient sounds to create an unsettling or even scary soundscape. Electro-Acoustic Music7/9/2004Electro-acoustic music is a term used to describe a broad range of modern classical electronic music. It often explores the interaction of natural and electronically generated sounds and effects. House Music1/26/2004House music retains much of the heavy regular beat of disco, but tends to be more electronic, with drum machine rhythms and synthesized basses. The music is song based, and draws on a variety of influences, including Latin, jazz, soul, gospel and reggae. It often features melodies and harmonies that are neo-romantic in style.
