This year, Native Instruments is helping you get ready for the new year by stuffing your stocking with a bizarre new instrument called Metaphysical Function.

Metaphysical Function is a self-playing sound generator that can be used as a stand-alone application within OS X or Windows XP/2000. The instrument combines “multiple waveform visualization with dynamic parameter automation”. There are thirty-two presets that include ambient soundscapes ranging from soothing to disturbing. Randomization can be varied to create limitless varieties.

Metaphysical Function will be useful for ambient artists, but the output would also sound great sampled and looped.

It’s available as a free download from Native Instrument’s site.

      something to think about

I’m struck by the insidious, computer-driven tendency to take things out of the domain of muscular activity and put them into the domain of mental activity. The transfer is not paying off. Sure, muscles are unreliable, but they represent several million years of accumulated finesse. — Brian Eno
