Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Gaza lay down the mellow grooves with The Richest Man in Babylon. The latest tracks from this duo draws respectfully from a variety of influences, including jazz, world music, soul and electronica. The world music influences are especially strong. There’s afro-beat, Persian, and Indian influences throughout. By combining these influences with their psychedelic downtempo electronica, Thievery Corporation creates a unique style.

On The Richest Man in Babylon, Thievery Corporation works with a talented group of new and old collaborators. Sleepy wonder, Lou Lou, Shinehead, and Emiliani Torrini all contribute. On “Heaven’s Gonna Burn Your Eyes”, Torrini adds a dreamy vocal to a downtempo rhythm track.

“Facing East” has a very eastern vibe, with what sounds like santur tablas, and electronics that have a bit of a bhangra feel.

Throughout, the production is slick, even when it’s emulating lo-fi effects. The mix of world influences, along with an ambient electronic edge, further develops the unique style that Thievery Corporation showed on its earlier albums.
