PortaGigGlyph Technologies is shipping the new PortaGig, a bus-powered external drive suitable for mobile audio use.

The PortaGig features a brushed aluminum case, measures approximately 3 inches wide by 5 inches deep, and weighs less than 10 ounces. It’s bus powered, so it can be used without needing AC power. If bus power is not available or is insufficient, an optional power supply is available from Glyph.

Available in capacities of 80GB and 100GB, PortaGig utilizes Seagate’s Momentus 2.5 inch drive technology. It has an 8MB cache and is capable of 35MB/sec sustained transfer rates using the FireWire port, making it quite a workhorse in a quiet, small package. With FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 HI-Speed interfaces, PortaGig is compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux systems.

“With a 7,200 RPM drive inside, it has been tested to support audio sessions using sample rates of up to 96Khz with rather impressive results,” says Mike Driscoll, Glyph President. “It makes recording and editing on location easy, and serves as a handy way to get large amounts of data from one place to another.”

PortaGig comes standard with a one-year warranty.

More information is available at the Glyph site.

      something to think about

What people call unemotional just doesn’t have a single overriding emotion to it. The things that I like best are the ones that ambiguous on the emotional level. — Brian Eno
