Think you've misunderstood what automation is for then. You use automation to automatically change the value of a setting, an example might be to fade in an increase in the level of a chorus effect on a synth line over a 4 bar period. Unless you've got 3 hands you're gonna struggle to do that in real time.

I never had the need to draw or use automation while recording.
I just record all my tracks in real time in one take.
