David Byrne & Brian Eno Working On Album, Tour

David Byrne and Brian Eno are working together again, planning an album and possibly a tour:

The dream art-rock team of David Byrne and Brian Eno will return with new, strange fruit soon, the former Talking Heads man told NME.com recently.

Speaking at an event in New York, Byrne revealed that the duo had rekindled the relationship they formed in the late 70s/early 80s which resulted in three Talking Heads records and 1981’s classic My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

“I’m finishing up a record with Brian Eno, a musician that I worked with 30 years ago,” Byrne said following an appearance with Paul Simon at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on the 9th of April. “We did a record together of songs, and that’ll come out.”

Anything else in the pipeline?

“…I’m also working on a collaboration with Fatboy Slim, also songs, I don’t know when that’ll be done but sometime.”

Is that awesome news, or what?

“Brian had written a lot of music, but needed some words, which I know how to do. What’s it sound like? Electronic gospel,” adds Byrne. “That’s all I’m saying.”

We ought to be mad at the government not mad at the people…..that kept Byrne & Eno from doing anything for 20 years.

  2. My comment was an attempt at a humorous reworking of the first line of America Is Waiting from the Bush of Ghosts album (one of my all time faves), not intended to express anger in any measure. I did not know the gov’t had anything to do with preventing Byrne & Eno from working together, can you provide a link to this info?

  3. D-oh! You out-referenced my reference, and I didn’t even catch it! Is my face red! (Nice one synthhead!)

As for the collaboration itself: the fact that as opposed to Bush Of Ghosts, where Byrne & Eno worked together in the studio, building up jams and doing a cut & paste number on found vocals, it sounds to me like this latest effort will not be either as groundbreaking nor as adventurous – inasmuch as Eno put the music beds together on his own and is having Byrne write & sing lyrics on top of them. I am expecting a relatively sedate, mature-sounding Talking-Heads-ish extension of “Another Day On Earth”

  4. doctec – you’re probably right about it being less groundbreaking. They’re twenty years older and both have developed pretty mature styles.

I’m still looking forward to the collaboration, though.

While I’m a huge Eno fan, I’ve never been that big on his vocal stuff, primarily because of his inane lyrics. Some artists can come up with stream of consciousness sound-lyrics that are very evocative – but Eno’s typically do nothing for me. (I did like Baby’s on Fire, though!)

Byrne is really strong lyrically, so it should be a great match. Their three Talking Heads albums are classics.

  5. Anyone ever recall the lawsuit they had to settle for all their “Sampling” on that lp?
I liked it a lot but it’s super annoying to hear them talk-their egos are sky high!
