This video, by abre ojos, is third in an ongoing series of live sound & visual improvisations using a modular synthesizer, Dave Smith Evolver, Nord Micro Modular and Quartz Composer on a Macbook Pro.

Artists comment:

abre ojos is a term mentioned in a book called 1606 – An Epic Adventure by Evan McHugh. 1606 is about the multiple discoveries and voyages to Australia before the “official discovery” by Captain James Cook in 1788. “Abre Ojos” was a constant saying by the Spanish and Portuguese sailors while navigating the dangerous reef infested waters surrounding Australia’s coastline meaning “Watch Out” or “Open Your Eyes” there is danger all around.

      something to think about

When Mozart was composing at the end of the eighteenth century, the city of Vienna was so quiet that fire alarms could be given verbally, by a shouting watchman mounted on top of St. Stefan’s Cathedral. In twentieth-century society, the noise level is such that it keeps knocking our bodies out of tune and out of their natural rhythms. This ever-increasing assault of sound upon our ears, minds, and bodies adds to the stress load of civilized beings trying to live in a highly complex environment. — Stephen Halpern
