The Top 100 DJs In The World

DJ Mag has announced their list of the Top 100 DJs, and Armin Van Buuren, and trance music in general, has come out on top. In the #2 and #3 positions are Tiësto and Paul van Dyk.

I’m surprised to see Infected Mushroom in the top 10. And where are the female DJs?

  1. Absolutely perfect top 100 list — no one at all on there I’d cross the street to hear spin.

It’s a great list of sex perverts and drug addicts though!

  2. This is more like the list of “the worst commercial crap-like trance shit DJs”,with a few exceptions.Very few exceptions,I shall add…

    1. what about stone and terminal.. best cd secret cd atleast only out on piurate bay, and they where on that,. so fuck that list

  3. yeah i agree. this is worse than when guitar magazines put out top 100 lists. they put on skazi and infected mushroom but leave off simon posford? dumb

  4. Carl Cox is only #12? Somebody is smoking some serious shwag.
Carl Cox is better than most of their top ten. And a real DJ too.
Missing from this list: DJ Spooky and Crystal Method.
As a DJ duo, CM chew up most of these people. And Spooky?
If you’ve heard him live, you’d know why he should be on here.
Oh well, at least Samantha Ronson isn’t on here, so I’ll give them
    cred for that.

  5. It’s probably worth noting that several of these folks are way more than “DJs”, making them more relevant to the music world than Armin van Buuren or Tiësto could ever hope to be.

Come to think of it, my Golden Retriever is probably a more important musical artist than Tiesto…

  6. Again, this list is a fucking disappointment. What is it with the shit trance DJs? Also, have people actually heard some of these people DJ? When was the last time anyone heard Justice DJ? Or Chemical Brothers come to that?
Tiesto is garbage, his fans are still going on about the Olympics thing, like that means anything. Then again, populist, simple, shallow music always wins against anything truely different and challenging. Hence trance’s huge popularity.
I could go on for fucking hours about this, but I’ll spare you the vitriol.

  7. Again, this list is a massive disappointment. What is it with the terrible trance DJs? Also, have people actually heard some of these people DJ? When was the last time anyone heard Justice DJ? Or Chemical Brothers come to that?
Tiesto is garbage, his fans are still going on about the Olympics thing, like that means anything. Then again, populist, simple, shallow music always wins against anything truely different and challenging. Hence trance’s huge popularity.
I could go on for hours about this, but I’ll spare you the vitriol.

  8. I see very little reason to mix up all electronic dance music and come up with a top DJ list. This way, the DJs of melodic trance and other easily approachable music naturally occupy the top positions every time.

  9. in terms of sheer technical ability. richie hawtin puts everyone else above him on that list to shame. this list is more of a popularity context than anything.

  10. My favs that actually made it. House mainly.
Deadmau5, Fedde Le Grande, Laidback Luke, Steve Angello, Ricardo VIllalobos, Benni Benassi, Daft Punk, Justice, Bob Sinclair.

As you can see im a white twenty something from America. New York specifically or else I wouldn’t think D.J.s spun anything but Hip Hop.

  11. Y hav all these trance djs won?? cos trance is th th most popular music worldwide!!! nd as 4 it being a popularity contest… obviously it is cos most th people who go 2 any event dont no how 2 mix they just listen 2 th tunes. so sort your heads out and stop windging house heads!! all th people moaning are clearly house heads gutted of th fact that trance has once agen came out on top nd bad news 4 u again is that it will next year 2!! all the people griefin tiesto, ive saw him numerous times djing on 4 cd dex for 4-6 hours a set nd not make mistakes so how can u possibly say he isnt good?? been blown away by his sets more than a few times. deadmau5 excellent producer but cudnt touch th likes of tiesto on dex!! alot of jealousy on this website!! trance 4 life!!!

    1. yeah it's really not as difficult as you think think to mix trance on 4 CD decks not turntables. CD decks. Wow how impressive to let your little machine load up 4×4 beats and fade tracks in and out while your beat matching mixer does most of the work. He may be popular. but top 3 in tha world. Really go to any DMC event and then tell me Tiesto is still the Worlds 2nd best DJ. This is not a rip on trance either just the fact that these simply are not the top 3 dj's in tha world

  12. Jealousy has nowt to do with this list.I hate house with an equal passion as trance,I find them both plasticky, empty and annoying.Listening to commercial trance played by the likes of Tiesto or Van Dy(c)k is like listening to the same track for 8 hours straight, and possibly turns you into a brainless idiot. In short:that’s worst what could’ve happened to electronic music:chewed out of ambition, sense of experimentalism and innovation.Brainless bashing for the masses.

  13. I agree that Armin van buuren is really pretty much the best right now…however there some dj’s coming up however.Markus Schulz probably deserves to go a bit higher..i would say that Cosmic Gate should be in the top 20 atleast..

  14. Not sure about why there’s all the hate for the trance DJ’s.

Obviously a lot of people like trance – maybe just cranky people leave more comments?

Also, what’s with kent? Since when are DJs a bunch of “perverts and drug addicts”?

    1. wow honey you really are kinda clueless. Since the scene began there have been drug addicted dj's perverts I don't know about on that list, but I've def seen dj's taking advantage of these little raver girls that are star struck and drugged up themselves. I'm speaking of 30 yr old men and 16-20 year old girls. Pretty sick if u ask me

  15. This is a list of DJs and Producers. Like deadmau5 is at #11. Now I really like a lot of deadmau5’s stuff. He’s a good producer. But even if you read his myspace blog, he says he isn’t a DJ. He says he’s never played a record or cd for a crowd in his life. He says he’s a producer.

Also, it is the same people over and over again.

My advice to any DJs out there ever wanting to make this list: MAKE MUSIC! Because people don’t care how technically skilled you are when it comes to these. It’s all about how many good tracks you put out.

  16. Whether you like drum and bass or not, Andy C deserves to be well up the top of the list alond with a few other people such as Subfocus. As usual, very disapointing.

  17. u guys are all a joke… Armin van Buuren and tiesto dj progressive as well as trance not just plain trance… also HOUSE IS DYING and ACID HOUSE is just plain gayness i.e justice nd all those other gay french dj’s like daft punk who sit in a tower controlling lights for 2hrs where all there sets are just pre recordings.. I’m really into the more progressive style, I would’ve liked to see deadmau5 in top 10 somewhere but nonetheless the list was fair. Also if u house fans think tiesto and armin van buuren sets are “bad” then i ask u to listen to one of there sets, its not all trance alot of there set is progressive, when u listen u will see how much stronger trance dj’s are at djing progressive.

  18. Daft punk drop their shit live, using ableton live. There are interviews of them talking about how they build and modify their sets to extend parts and so on according to how the crowd reacts. Get your fucking facts right before trashing people, moron. YOU TEH FA1L

  19. daft punk = old. U know wat bev i dont even understand a fkn word your sayn. Nd blue brat….. yer modify mb scratch it a litle… lulz apart from that mate its a prerecording.

  20. The latest top 100 lest suprised me in some aspects, having seen Armin twise he is a cracking DJ but wouldnt be my number one!I would certainly have to agree with (these lists suck), Deadmau5 by far is a brilliant producer, but not a DJ, having seen him a few times, he plays his own tracks to get the crowd pumpin so his mistakes go unnoticed, he even sold his Pionner CDJ1000’s on ebay because he couldnt mix with them, Take away his laptop and Ableton Live and you have nothing! Yes the list is primeraly trance, but it has been for years, now that Tech is becoming more influential the Trance domination will fade. Well in my eyes i can see it. LOL

My top 5 DJ’s for 2008 Were (in no particular order)
    1. James Zabiela (jaw dropping)
    2. Sebastian Leger
    3. Ferry Corsten (blow my mind away on more then 1 Occasion)
    4. Dubfire (tecnically Superb)
    5. Steve Lawler (unfortunately didnt get to see but heard alot of his sets from space this year and Oh my word is all i have to say!)

Anyone have any thoughts about that?

  21. ANDY ANDY ANDY!!!!!! ANDY ANDY C!!!!
well if Andy C is there at 50, then so should Hype, Mampi Swift, Concord Dawn, DJ BAILEY!!! for crying out loud, most of the guys on this list have such boring styles. truly, the ones with two turntables and a mixer, and who mash it up all over the place, riding the vibe, where are they??
no good. no good. you’ve fucked up the list.
    sorry, but it’s just shit.

  22. Aahh yes, the usual trance v house argument between people who can’t spell their name and people who’s heads are up their own arses. I’ve seen tiesto and his crowd consisted of gimped 16 year olds on their virgin buzz and scumbags in tracksuits with cans of dutch gold down the legs. His music is shite and so are his mixing skills but 20,000 kids can’t be wrong… right?
Van burren is marginally better, but only because he lets rip with the odd techno track before mixing in some girl vocal about clouds or some such shite.
Then we get to the house crowd with their disco lyrics and hand clappy choruses. I’ve seen stacks of these at womens nights out when i had to bring the missus. The crowd consisted mainly of women, gays, and posers- basically people who spend as long in the bathroom as trance fans do on the dole. As for the djs.. The best of these are either steve lawler or danny tenaglia and the reason they rise above the others is down to expierence and the fact that they occaisonally put on their man pants and venture away from the piano/vocal muck and head for the tribal beats.
The best djs on this list are the ones who take chances and do it on VINYL. You can waffle on about cdj all you like but button pushing is not dj-ing and as for the fool who thinks its an acchievement to mix 4, 6 or 26 cds without making a mistake SO FUCKING WHAT. HE’S USING TRAKTOR, a tool for tools. It doesnt allow you to make mistakes.

A few years ago i’d have put richie hawtin top of the list due to the fact he could mix 4 vinyls and use a drum machine and efx unit WITHOUT MAKING A SINGLE MISTAKE. However as he got more and more technical and went away from vinyl i think he lost the feel for the crowd he once had.
Dave clarke would also have been riding high on the list and he still whips up a crowd something rotten but his pandering to the electro elite has led to slightly disjointed sets.
Dj bam bam and james zabelia are the exceptions to the cdj rule but thats down to their phenomenal workrate with the efx units. These guys really push the boundaries of what you can do behind the (cd)decks.
The most gifted scratcher and beat juggler is without doubt Claude young, a true Djs dj who sets up a camera above the decks to show the crowd just what he is doing. He has more mixing talent in one pube on the left hand side of his ballbag than most of the top 100 combined and yet due to X factor viewers voting in a dj poll he isn’t even on the list.

Which brings me to the man who should be on the top of this and every other dj list ever. Without question, the best man to liven up your night, to play a mix of house, techno, trance hardcore and even some rock music is the man who has been doing it for longer than virtually everyone else. He scratches, he beat juggles, he mixes 3 decks and he spreads his infectious groove like no one else can. He is a living legend and no matter what your taste he will make you smile.
I’ve seen him over 30 times since 1996 from dublin to london to ibiza to australia and i look forward to seeing him again.

The greatest Dj I and the world has ever seen is CARL COX.That is my opinion, and I am right.

  23. The kid that wrote the above post is clearly a bigot that relies on ridiculous stereotypes and selfish generalisations to decorate his points, so he can suck my cock.

Of COURSE this list is based on popularity, you dispshits. Would you vote for the person you were very familier with, or the person you had never heard of before? Stop moaning that your personal favourite DJ isn’t number one. If everyone else thought the same as you then your favourite WOULD be number one. Sorry, perhaps that was a little too down-to-earth for your primitive minds to comprehend.

  24. First of all, the kid that wrote the above post is clearly a bigot that relies on ridiculous stereotypes and selfish generalisations to decorate his points, so he can suck my gonads.

Of COURSE this list is based on popularity, you whiney dipshits. Would you vote for the person you were familier with, or the person you had never heard of before? Stop moaning that your personal favourite DJ isn’t number one. If everyone else thought the same as you then your favourite WOULD be number one.

Sorry, perhaps that was a little too down-to-earth for your primitive minds to comprehend, it’s clear that someone needs to keep you morons in order.

  25. how did dj craze / dj qbert not make that list?
and as for the dnb heads, friction is making large movements, and i feel has alot more technique on turntables then andy c?

  26. I just love how these sorts of forums rattles peoples cages!

We’ve all looked at this list for the same reason……. we like DJ’s right?

When i first started showing an interest in DJ’ing i have to admit I was listening to the likes of Judge Jules, Oaky and other mainstream stuff at the time, and because this was all I had experienced, i, along with a lot of other folk, thought these sounds and the DJ’s were the mutts nuts.
Then i stumbled across the top 100 DJ’s list for that year and instead of ranting on about how the music i listened to, and the dj’s i favoured, were the only thing worth bothering with, i went out and found some mix’s from some dj’s on the list that i hadn’t heard of, and went to nights showcasing dj’s that i’d never seen.
Since then I have never looked back and embrace the fact that all the guys on the list are professionals at what they do and in one way or another they can all rock a party. There are too many styles of music, too many dj’s, (where are 2manydj’s on the list by the way?) and too many different methods of dj’ing nowadays to have only one list, there will always be the trance or house purists arguing that tiesto or erick morillo is the messiah but we surely need a best hip hop dj list, and a best techno dj list, best D&B dj, best ableton dj etc etc…..
Whether you are watching Ritchie Hawtin click away at his 3 billion samples in Ableton, Qbert scratch the shit out of a priceless vinyl, or Zabiela’s bionic arms going crazy on the cdj’s, it is all a talent that we most of us can appreciate and one day hope to be as good as. So throw the trance v house argument out of the top floor window and start to appreciate whats good about “DJ’s!” and hopefully this list will evolve into something a bit more representative.

BTW I’m pleased to see Dave “fucking” Pearce is no where insight. The man is a menace to life itself not just music!

  27. “World’s Top 100 DJs”…what a joke. This like tallying the top 100 Guitar Hero scores and projecting that as something important to humanity. Or perhaps making a list of the top 100 backup dancers. Or probably more accurate, it’s like listing the 100 crack whores on skid row…nobody but the pimps care. Everyone knows djs are just frustrated slacker musicians, but with less talent and too lazy to get a actual job!

  28. I agree with anyone who said its a shit list its missing so many awesomely talented turntablists nd producer/Dj’s Tiesto is so overratted

  29. i think armin van buuren is where his place belong…and then i think that ferry corsten its better then Dj tiesto…tiesto is expired
    Armin ONLY!!!!

  30. Daft Punk being #38? really?

This is coming from a HUGE daft punk fan… But still, top 10 at least.
House ftw, I think that tiesto is extremely overrated.
And fedde le grand and deadmau5 should
Be higher up. And definately eric prydz should be higher up.

  31. TBH, i don’t agree with this chart. DJ’s like paul oakenfold, ferry corsten and carl cox should deffo be higher. No chance that infected mushrooms could be in top ten, this is nonsence. Top 3 is quite good. Although i would have put it a bit differently (but that’s only because i’m a big fan of DJ tiësto Club Life mix’es). But Armin van Buuren is quite good also. Would have put it this way : “1./2. Armin van Buuren/Tiësto” But that’s only my oppinion. Well the list needs some improvements anyway.

  32. Such a stupid list. Mostly the same DJs from the past 10 years… and wtf drae, daft punk aren’t djs (and shouldn’t be counted) benny benassi is terrible?!? Actually…RA’s top 100 of 2008 from their readers is much more to my taste. At least there is more variety, respect where due…

  33. For the people that says trance is shit, I dont think you have any creative braincells or feelings, emotions. Because that is what trance is all about, it comes from the heart. Tiesto is my favourite DJ ever, so I would have thought him to be No.1……..music is passion. Music says what you cant verbally

  34. Everyone here is wrong Andy C is technicnally the best these are all poll votes andy c was voted the Best Dj of 2006,07 and 08. He’s the first one to have won it 3 times in a row. In the whole world. He plays all over the world. He may not be well known but i can assure you he is the best. He plays all over the world. All the techno Dj’s cheat. i saw eric pridz mixin on a cd deck i class that as cheating cus it automatically snyc’s to were you want it to go. Viynals you hav to put it were you want manually.

  35. You guys from America or something? Must be, here in Europe we laugh at Americans… Americans dont know NOTHING about trance, techno, house etc music
Why do you think American dj’s are almost never in Europe? Because 19 out of 20 are a joke…. Americans can build cars, planes, buildings etc But what they cant is mixing music. Markus Schulz, John Digweed are 10% the dj Tiesto or Armin is… Americans go to youtube and see Tiesto, they base their comment on some videos. The best dj’s come from Germany, Holland, England, France and Italy, period.
if you dont know squad you call their music ”commercial”. But being commercial means that you are one of the best. Because becoming famous and a succesfull dj is EXTREEMLY hard. So only the best can make a living as DJ.

So stop your whining, the list is absolutely perfect!

  36. I pretty much agree with the list 🙂
Tho i believe Markus Schulz must go a bit higher 🙂
    He's my favorite right now…
    His sets are great…

  37. First of all – I second Marc.

Second of all – I think it's a complete waste to debate here about the list being wrong / right. One can't base House VS Trance or Hip Hop VS Psy Trance etc., they are all different genres and can't be argued on. Now, one can't even debate on the inferiority / superiority of the generes or people listening to a specific genre because it's just an individual choice and thus liking.

I always feel, any music and every music is good. However, differentiating amongst genres is just plain and simple insanity. People need to understand that this list is just a fancy thing. However, music as a whole will always emerge as a winner.

  38. Real house music has been dead for some time, it got bleached out over in europe and has been spit back at the USA with no soul or purpose. The music is more interested in sound FX & 3 minute breakdowns than a real stick to your brain groove.

Techno is so dead that netlabels can't even give the track away. Most labels are so broke that artists are beginning to get smart and instead of superstar DJ getting paid $5K a gig to play your record you released for free on a broke ass label, artists are finding it's not so bad working a dayjob and making music on weekends for a blog.

I mean if you have a computer you have a recording studio it would have cost you thousands of dollars put together.

This being said I've seen the videos and feeds from some of those top 20 dj's in the list. I agree it is a waste of time to bitch n moan about lists like this, even though I just bitched and moaned. All that matters is what the people come out and support. More power to them, they seem to love the guys on the list. Cant stop progress.

  39. This is a horrible list, the number one reason being that Daft Punk who should be number one or at least in the top ten, but they are number 38. They are amazing Dj's, infact their the best I've ever heard. And second should be David Guetta, after Daft Punk, of course.

  40. This is a horrible list, the number one reason being that Daft Punk who should be number one or at least in the top ten, but they are number 38. They are amazing Dj's, infact their the best I've ever heard. And second should be David Guetta, after Daft Punk, of course.

  41. hahaha oh my god, youre all a bunch of annoying crying bitches, "this is the worst dj crap shit fuckoff list", ………don't take it that serious guys, i know you're mad cause armin and tiesto earn a lot more money than we all are going to earn in our entire lifes but, common!

  42. hahaha oh my god, youre all a bunch of annoying crying bitches, "this is the worst dj crap shit fuckoff list", ………don't take it that serious guys, i know you're mad cause armin and tiesto earn a lot more money than we all are going to earn in our entire lifes but, common!

  43. ok.what about cajmere, doc martin or frankie bones.have someone heard them before? they're very very good and have really skills.and there are many more who deserves to be in this shamefull list of same o and o.the djing thing has changed a lot now.i'd really like to see the scene turn back the way it used to be "underwround".

  44. ok.what about cajmere, doc martin or frankie bones.have someone heard them before? they're very very good and have really skills.and there are many more who deserves to be in this shamefull list of same o and o.the djing thing has changed a lot now.i'd really like to see the scene turn back the way it used to be "underwround".

  45. wow ronski speed is sooooooo much greater then 97 he should be in the top 10. I dont even seeeeee dash berlin on there. in my opnion if he was as well known as armin he would be number 1. his tracks put u in so much more of a state of trance then armin. WTF

  46. For as high up as Sasha and Digweed are up on the list, you'd think the local promoters in Columbus Ohio would be trying to bring them to town as much as they do Deadhouse.

  47. For as high up as Sasha and Digweed are up on the list, you'd think the local promoters in Columbus Ohio would be trying to bring them to town as much as they do Deadhouse.

  48. Ha ha ha… I love this shi*. All the people that are commenting on here are the 'I hate Commercial shi*' music snobs. You don't even enjoy music for the sake of enjoying it, you are bitter twisted people who decide your lives have to go against the norm to make you feel like you're 'different' to the rest. I hate the people in this Industry. Stop been so frigin hateful of the world, music is commercial because it appeals to a majority because the majority of the world understands good music! As soon as a song becomes commercial all the music snobs in the industry straight away think it's shi*. Like something for what it is, not what it is seen to be. Of course all the Commercial Artists are going to be on this list… What, you think all the unknown Drum N Bass Artists are going to be on here? Idiots.

  49. not a fan of people mixing up techno with other genres… no offense but tiesto is 2 and id say thats some trance shit

  50. They need to put some american hip hop djs on there and if it includes producers than TImbaland, The Neptunes, Jermain Dupri deserve there rightful spot as well. And Afrojack and Chuckie put amazing music out this year plus there sets at EDC 2010 where mindblowing they deserve some love too.

  51. nearly all bean to cavo paradiso ,the best club in the world in the second best island of the world …. mykonos greece w this dj’s

  52. Infected mushroom deserves a first place indeed. Just saw their show at szigetfestival and was blown away by how good they are, and i'm not even a huge fan of dance music. Tiesto and Armin van Buren are boring as shit. (along with lots of other dj's on that list)

  53. if you would live in belgium you should know that this is a verry shitty list WHAT ABOUT THE PROPHET LAURENT GARNIER MARCO BAILLY DR LEKTROLUV GREEN VELVET ??????????????????????? LEVE BELGIE

  54. u guys are all a joke… Armin van Buuren and tiesto dj progressive as well as trance not just plain trance… also HOUSE IS DYING and ACID HOUSE is just plain gayness i.e justice nd all those other gay french dj's like daft punk who sit in a tower controlling lights for 2hrs where all there sets are just pre recordings.. I'm really into the more progressive style, I would've liked to see deadmau5 in top 10 somewhere but nonetheless the list was fair. Also if u house fans think tiesto and armin van buuren sets are "bad" then i ask u to listen to one of there sets, its not all trance alot of there set is progressive, when u listen u will see how much stronger trance dj's are at djing progressive. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAAHHA STUPID CUNT

  55. Wow. No one here gets the point. This list does not matter. Electronic Music is not about who is better than who.

You all need to take some skittles and feel the music the way it's supposed to be felt.

Hopefully a few of you can feel it without it but if you cant then as in Dance For Life 'you only take e when you need to and you need to"

So everyone chill and just get your ass out on the floor.

  56. LOL, I’ve to say the on the web dating or electronic dating has come a hell of a way from the days of easy chat rooms. Much more and far more individuals are turning to on the web dating sites to display possible dates.

  57. In my opinion the best DJ should be the most skilled, even though producing is part of it, it’s completely different. People these days really don’t understand concept of music they just listen to what’s played on the radio or by others around them and the reason Trance mainly is worldwide is because it was the main start of all dance music back in the 80’s/90’s all this new genre’s Dubstep / DnB (Not dissin even though i’m not a fan) were not around back then and people seem to just jump onto anything new these days.
