Synthtopia Site Update: Media Temple FAIL

Synthtopia was unavailable for most of the weekend (Feb 28th + Mar 1) because of problems at Media Temple, our host.

Basically, a large part of their infrastructure crashed and burned and it took them a couple of days to get things patched back up.

We moved to Media Temple about a year ago, because our previous host was unreliable, and we’d heard good things about Media Temple. Not sure what to think, now.

The good news is that we’re back up, there’s no data lost and we’ve got a bunch of interesting synth & electronic music news to share. We’ll try to be back to our normal update schedule by the end of the day.

Thanks for your patience!

  1. Welcome back! I was about to take you off my Chrome auto-open as I thought you were dead. Glad you’re not 🙂

  2. This affected other sites I adore which are also on Media Temple. They gave off a very elegant impression with their site design, but — sux this happened and not sure why a placeholder message could’ve placed up by them for you in the interim, but WELCOME BACK!

  3. Thank god Synthtopia is life! I was very worried couple of days,
very nice to see this site up and running again.

  4. Glad you are back and recovered. Of the slowest 10% of web sites I visit each day, Synthtopia loads the slowest. Maybe you can ask the host to increase your bandwidth or spread server load to allow for faster render times. Still, good to not have lost you!

  5. Glad to have you back – I was worried there.

Synthtopia is the best synth site on the Internet.

    Not when it’s down, though!

  6. Jaime – we’d rather talk about 303’s than 404’s, but it doesn’t always work out that way……..

grfx303 – thanks for the feedback. Some of the site slowness comes from the fact that we embed a lot of videos, which means that your browser has to load the player for multiple embeds when the page loads. This is call between speed and usability – I think that people want to be able to preview and see the video right away, instead of linking to anther page. I will be on the lookout for was to speed up the site, though. If anybody has suggestions, I’m open to them.
