OK, so I was being a doubter. First attempt and it’s included Manos Xatzidakis, Bow Wow Wow, The Beach Boys, Marc Lavoine, Srge Gainsbourg, David Bowie, Frederik Chopin and… one of my own tracks!!! So all is forgiven, Apple.

What I love about the shuffle mode on iPods is the very idiosyncracy of the stream of music that results. To my mind, the recognition of ‘types’ or ‘moods’ of music verges on the superficial. But I ain’t dismissing it. In fact, I’m off to try it out…

Current DJ apps do a credible job of automatic beatmatching – so intelligent, automatic transitions are doable.

If this leads to unlikely-yet-wonderful mashups, I’m all for it. More transitions than mere crossfades would be most welcome, however.

I can see it now. iTunes leans back from the mixer and says “dude, did that blonde chick ask you to play some Creedence during your set too?”
