This is a demo of the Roland SH-5 analog synthesizer, a vintage synth classic from 1975.

The Roland SH-5 is one of the best compact monophonic synthesizers from Roland.
It has almost everything, that you could wish from a monophonic synth: 2 VCOs, 1 resonant multimode filter (highpass/bandpass/lowpass), 1 bandpass filter, 2 LFOs, Sample & Hold, ring modulator, oscillator synchronisation, noise generator (white and pink noise), ADSR and AR envelopes. Also there is a nice signal mixer with routing capabilities.

This is terrific – thanks for the reminder. My older brother bought one in 1981 or 1982, and we did a few home recordings on a 2-channel Fostex and experimented with tape delays, slowing down the tape, etc. It was one hell of a piece, and I owe much to the SH-5 for making it easy to work with the software synths in Propellerhead Reason.

This was the very first synth I owned and I loved it – it was a very versatile synth. My party piece was to produce an air raid, consisting of the drone of the aircaft (detuned and PWM oscillators through the fixed band pass filter) while at the same time having the whistle of dropping bombs (using the fliter in self-oscillation mode) and finally the explosions (using the noise generator through the filter). It involved a lot of knob twiddling (!) but sounded quite effective! And very impressive for just one synth. Of course, it could be used musically too!!
