I'd recommend that if you are new to electronics and synth gear to build the original soundlab synth first. It would be a great learning experience, and would definitely be a fun thing to have around. Troubleshooting something as complex as the ultimate can be quite a pain if you aren't familiar enough with electronics. I've been building and repairing analog gear for about 6 years now, and I feel confident enough that I'll get this thing up and running properly without any major issues.... But not overly confident. I'm building one of these right now, and I have to say it's not for the faint of heart. I'd recommend that if you are new to electronics and synth gear to build the original soundlab synth first.
