I think they used Powers of Ten because it's an acronym for POT and that's cool in a beavis and butthead sort of way. Uh-huhuh, uhhhhh, huhuhuhuh.

umm, yeah, I have to agree. I saw this in school as a kid, and it was mindblower of first order before special effects ala Star Wars even existed. Maybe IBM could shut this down, but maybe they wouldn't bother. Either way, this isnt much of an achievement for the musician, except that he gets exposed and didn't have to take the heat for using a completely unoriginal video. Another example of the current youth of today being bereft of imagination, and thinking they are being creative when they are just 'discovering' work that is well known to people who are older. Make your own videos for pete's sake….there is so much available software to do so these days. Then again, I'm glad to see the Powers of Ten, getting play, but the title should read 'Powers of Ten' w music by yadda yadda.

Who gets credited for what aside, I just thought it was worth saying: Microscopic has become one of my favourite all-time tracks, thanks to first hearing it here on Synthtopia a few months ago.

Seriously one of the nicest electronic pieces of music yet written. Takes it's time, has *great*sounds*, and a very, very catchy theme.

* What was used to create this track? To my ears, it sounds like a Moog Modular, but could be any number of similar boxen…

No, I wouldn't call it a fan-produced soundtrack. Mat didn't create the music for the film. Someone else just took his music and replaced the existing soundtrack in a film. There are plenty of videos on youtube where people come up with new soundtracks specifically for an existing film — those are fan-produced soundtracks. This is just an example of a Reese's Peanut Butter cup situation –someone took two things that are great on their own, put them together, and they happen to work.

A perfect film with the perfect music, a great match. To be fair even on Mats site he says it's based on the IBM classic, and the video says its Powers of Ten with all the credits left in. To me, a 'fan made' video just means that it's not an officiall video. Great stuff, more please! :- )

Yeah, this is just swapping out the score for an extremely famous film, well known by virtually everybody in the creative industries. It's hardly surprising that it got a quarter million views, and it probably has little to do with Mat. Much respect to him, though; he is an excellent musician, and I don't mean to slight him in any way.

Calling this a "fan produced" video is a bit of a misnomer. All someone did was take the short film "Powers of 10" by Charles and Ray Eames and used Mat's music as the soundtrack. Mat's stuff is great (he appeared on my Fluidities CD a couple years ago) and good for him for getting a lot of publicity. But I'm also a a huge fan of the Eames' work, and would hate to see someone else get credit for their work. I think it's rather sketchy that the "creator" of this video didn't credit the source of the film in the info section on the youtube page, although thankfully, they are given credit at the end of the video.
