Torley Gets His Bow Chicka Wow On With Elektrik Piano

Synthtopia regular Torley has been really busy lately, exploring his massive array of software synths and sharing his thoughts on them in his YouTube videos.

Torley’s videos often baffle a few Synthtopia readers, because he doesn’t do formal reviews, but instead tends to open up his virtual instruments and see how the sounds inspire him. Go along for the ride, though, and you’ll find that he makes interesting ideomatic use of the instruments and their sounds.

In this case, he demonstrates not just the bow chicka wow power of Native Instruments’ Elektrik Piano, but also riffs on what Philip Glass might do on a Wurly.

  1. Nice one Torley, thanks for making this. Elektrik sounds pretty good, but it sure needs some tricks to complete the sound. I'll give it a try!

  2. Again (and never less appreciative than the first time), thanks for sharing the videos I make, synthhead!

I'm here to solve mysteries (not unlike Robert Stack… RIP… gosh the Unsolved Mysteries theme is awesome!) too so re: bafflement, any questions, let me know. I believe in leaving a recorder on when I don't expect a great performance to come out, because creativity bursts spontaneously that way.

My webcam glitched so this video doesn't show me playing, but it was a lot of fun.

Thanks Josh — if you look at Native Instruments' product line and decide you want a few more of their soft synths, I'd opt for the Komplete bundle, which Elektrik is included in. It's a great deal.

Context: I know and admire people doing great, comprehensive reviews and some companies' own videos (like Native Instruments themselves, Propellerhead, Ableton, and Camel Audio) are wonderfully-produced. But there's the raw, everyday, casual side to performance, what an enduser would experience. And that's what I show.

It's a solid deal, a great one if Bing (formerly Live) cashback comes back on eBay — I got a 25% savings on Kore 2 Komplete 5 via Nova Musik's eBay presence!
