Propellerhead Record Review

propellerhead-recordPropellerhead Record has just been released, but Remix magazine has an early review:

Record is a truly impressive all-in-one recording solution that will appeal to users of varying skill levels. Its creative approach to many areas of music production will certainly give it an edge in a field already crowded with choice.

The program’s amazing CPU efficiency and almost unbelievable internal mixer are certainly its major strengths.

Combine this with total Reason 4 integration, and you may see people moving from other DAWs to join the party.

See the full review here. See our earlier posts about Propellerhead Record, too.

  1. A few things I really like about Record:
    • The tempo changing abilities are astounding – every remixer should take a look at this
    • The scalability of the mixer (i.e. you can show/hide what you want)
    • Streamlined. Check out "here's how you start a project in Record" and then go back to your current DAW and count how many little boxes pop up here and there that you have to click through to get anything done.
    • Most of all, I like that Propellerhead has the balls to put in the features they think are essential, and intentionally NOT try to put in every feature under the sun.

  2. i love propellerheads products, they are truly the best. I have been using reason since day one and been using it till 4.0, now that they have released record and the fact that you can use it with reason is mind blowing! sounds kinda corny but im serious! lol, every dedicated reason user has always been dreaming of being able to record audio into reason. this program has far surpassed my expectations and is everything i could have ever asked for or any reason user could have asked for. reason and record = SICK!, the possibilities are endless!

  3. If Record doe not allow record audio . Then which button ? The rewind button on my Tape?
I am confused totally. My old tape record allow any voioce I sing.
Songs like kicking the Chinese from Tibet. Go back Hu Jintao communist.

  4. I'm a guitar player and a Reason 4 user.
I use to be a die hard Ableton Live 7 user, but I'm really impressed with Record.
The mixer section floors everything I've heard before and you get the standard (for propellerhead) top quality effects. The master compressor is sweet.
No VST compatibility .. well , this apparently looks like suicide for a software that targets guitar and bass players. The best tube amp simulations are available in VST , I use Guitar Rig 4 and Waves GTR 3 for my recordings ..and the tone is super cool
With Record you get a Line 6 software POD to insert as an fx in your Audio Track which sports 3(three !!!) amp simulations .
Well , lets face it : it sucks compared to the VST big guys from Native Instruments and Waves.
The days when Line6 POD family ruled the amp simulation world are long gone.
BUT .. instead of slamming in the insert fx just a Line6 amp and no more , I would suggest to give a try to the insert FX presets , under the Guitar Amp category.
You will get prompted with a combinator device filled one or more (in stereo) Line6 amps and a bunch of other devices , like compressors, equalizers , and most of all ,the powerful Scream Distortion device . A whole different world came to my ears scrolling the presets. You will not be disappointed.
    So, my point :
Is Record cool ? Yes, super cool .
Is the software tube amp simulation included in Record crap ? Yes, compared with state of the art simulations available on the market.
Is it possible , with some tweaking to get great guitar tones? : Yes again with a little faith.

  6. FeliceCast- Was trolling around on YouTube. IF you buy a Line6 LivePod pedalboard, all those amps,fx,etc.. are available in Record. Might be a cure for the blahs.

  7. Oh that's fine man ..
If you buy a 3000 $ tube amp and you mic it ..it will be instantly available in Record.
This is not the point .
I own Record and I love it .. with VST it would be heaven.

  9. It's downfall and failing is it's Ignition system – ie you have to plug this into a usb to start it – each and every time you open Record. The Ignition systems inherent pfoblems could cause serious issues and down time.

Lost, stolen, broken or lost or no internet connect results in a demo mode only for Record. let alone what about down time while waiting for a replacement Ignition usb key.

As a matter of fact – due to this Ignition system and problems getting it activated from out of the box – we had to go look at other viable software solutions. Too much time was wasted attempting and finding out there was no real viable work around from Propellerhead.

  10. comment continued:

I can't risk down time due to a failed usb device required to get software to work let alone do i wish to have my dedicated daw constantly onliine let alone online jsut to run one piece of software.

Even if every song pasted through it were to be a gold record – the problems both probable and possible and proven assostiated with the ingnition Key system – warrent looking elsewhere for fostwre solution. Propellerhead Tech support couldn't offer up a viable solution for us – hence we have looked elsewhere. even after paying for Record adn Reason.

  11. The ignition key is better than most copy-protection i've ever used. The only feature that is locked in demo mode is "open file". This means if something (i'm not sure what) breaks your key and your connection you will still be able to continue your work and save everything then sort out your problem later.

I'm really loving record at the moment.
