Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) has a new Mattson Mini Modular synthesizer, named Ichabod, and here’s a little footage of it getting broken in.

In my book, Ichabod is more monster synth than mini modular.

“Monster Synth” Defined

A monster synth is a large synthesizer that could potentially kill you, if it fell over on you. Monster synths also are named, ie., Tonto or The Synth of Doom.

“Ichabod”, for example, looks like it could easily take out a Smashing Pumpkin or two.

See the Mattson site for info on their synth modules.

With pointy corners and a weighty metal case, the DSI Evolver (desktop) wouldn't need to fall more than a single story to kill you, if it hit you in the head. (I mention it because its sitting on the couch next to me, and I've often marveled that it has the combination of portability and heft that could double as studio defense)

This suggests a whole "death by synth" thread, where readers evaluate "what it would take to kill you with synth X". A Korg Kaossilator, for example, would need a whole lot of force behind it to kill, while a Yamaha SY77 could kill while falling off the roof of a two story house. A "monster" synth would thus be one that could kill simply falling off the desktop.
