Jan van Nuenen created this IKEA solar-powered optical theremin thing, the Sunnan Synth.
The Sunnan Synth is made with an IKEA Sunnan solar lamp, photoresistors, pots and a cmos 556 ic. The IKEA Sunnan lamp is $20 at IKEA stores, and if you buy one, they donate another to UNICEF to help kids in small villages.

Okay, ignoring the fact that at $20 for two, Ikea is probably still making a profit on this tat, the "buy one, donate one" principle is still morally sound. To encourage the donors to buy a few more with a promise of making a noisy toy (and, let's face it, it could still be used just as a lamp) is a really neat idea. Kudos to Jan (and slightly less kudos to Ikea).
