Free Roland TR-808 Sample Library

Trash_Audio’s Surachai has created a Roland TR-808 sample library and is releasing it as a free download:

Justin graciously let me borrow his Roland TR-808 and when trying to program some patterns I noticed a few problems.

  • A) I’m clearly too stupid to work this machine – I eventually figured it out but off the bat, both the Pattern knob the Auto Fill In knob were double teaming my brain and left me staring at shifting patterns that mocked me with changing tempos.
  • B) The sequencing buttons themselves have been accumulating grime over the years which makes it difficult to activate a note. I would gladly take this thing apart and clean it but it’s not mine.
  • C) It’s outdated. While the interface is preferred for many people, I’d rather do this on a computer or something more flexible like a Machinedrum.

Long story short, I decided to sample it and save people the hassle of finding/buying one. Oh yeah and it’s free.

  1. I've had a kick sample from my 808 in MD for awhile now, …it's my 'go to' kick drum to this day.
However, as crazy as the 808's UI is, there's nothing out there that has that swing and groove, with envelopes of one part affecting the attack of others…it's just a magical box that has something to it that just can't be 'translated' via samples. And of course you guys know that already…so here's to making even crazier techno using the MachineDrum with sampled 808 hits! (no finer combo in the world perhaps?) Thanks so much for making these free…. what a delight!

  4. I recently checked out http://www.prostudiosamples.co.uk they have a Roland TR-808 sample set for sale which is brilliant. Its some guy who owns all the equipment and started sampling it all. I found it way better than those free samples dating back to the 90’s. You can hear its from an up to date studio. Couldn’t recommend anymore 🙂

  5. Good to see someone else is using the ProStudioSamples, got them in my new house track, proper jack beats. Do you not agree the kick sounds just like the real thing? my mate owns a real 808 and even he was convinced

  6. My developer is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on a variety of websites for about a year and am worried about switching to another platform. I have heard fantastic things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress posts into it? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!
