Tip For Rich Electronic Musicians: Don’t Build Your Dream House In Ibiza

Here’s a tip for all you filthy rich electronic musicians.

Don’t do what Enigma‘s Michael Cretu did – spend 9 years and $26 million building your palatial dream house cum studio in Ibiza – in a location where it was against the law:

Musician Michael Cretu built a villa the size of a village on top of a hill near Santa Agnes.

However, this was not actually allowed according to Spanish law. Despite this, the Sant Antoni municipality gave the green light to the project, providing him with all the necessary permits.

So it was all good. Until they told him he was going to have to tear his dream house down.

Unfortunately for Cretu, he fought the law and the law won.

This is what his palatial dream house cum studio looks like now:

Maybe it’s time to call up his real estate agent and put in a bid on Vince Clarke’s palatial dream house cum studio…..

  1. Early Enigma is amazing. The later stuff increasingly becomes derivative compose-by-numbers, as "The Lost Ones" makes evidently clear.

There are so many ways it could've evolved like a live show (which ended up being done by Gregorian, who coproduced the early Enigma stuff, and Cirque de Soleil, among others inspired like Deep Forest and Juno Reactor), but it didn't. So I'll treasure my memories of that early-90s era and, um…

Didn't Mike Oldfield have probs on Ibiza too? Oh. http://www.gearthhacks.com/forums/showthread.php?…

  5. I absolutely LOVE the best bits of Enigma, but yes the quality does fluctuate with a general downward trend over time. Don't forget that he scored the theme song job for one of the Olympics in the late 90's, I'm sure that would have bolstered his bank accounts.

My absolute favourite Enigma album would have to be The Screen Behind The Mirror. I do also like A Posteriori which was one of the more recent ones.

  6. This is what happens when you let your local lawyers and builders spend one million dollars of your money on bungs to the local politicians and police to get "all the necessary permits" – and then some damned honest national politician notices by chance. Oh, what a shame.

  9. Actually, Ol' Mikey's wife is the very famous German Singer "Sandra" – kinda like Madonna's equal in Europe, and Mikey just happenes to be the producer on almost all of her albums from 84 – 2006. She was the voice of Enigma also, so I dont think all his money came just from Enigma.
If you liked Italo Disco, or New Wave, you will like Sandra. : ) Just a 411

  11. Michael Cretu career didn't start in 1990 with the first Enigma album!
He was producer and composer of several famous bands from the 70's and 80's including names as Boney M or Mike Oldfield among many others.

Also Enigma album sales reached several millions and the first one as example sold over 22 million copies worldwide.

For the ones working in the musical industry it's easy to imagine the copyright and royalties amounts gathered trough the years with this kind of record sales…
