Propellerhead Reason On The Apple iPad – Coming Soon?

ipad-reason

Are you ready for Propellerhead Reason on the Apple iPad?

According to Propellerhead CEO Ernst Nathorst-Böös, it’s a distinct possibility:

“The iPad is at least as powerful a computer as the ones we started making software for back in the 90s. And that’s pretty exciting!”

Of course, the version of Propellerhead Reason that came out in back in the days was a lot less powerful than the current version. An iPad version of Propellerhead Reason would have to leave out some of Reason 4’s features.

This is all vaporware at this point – but it’s still, as Propellerheard’s CEO suggests, “pretty exciting”.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think of the idea of running Propellerhead Reason on the Apple iPad!

  1. Oh, yeah, a couple other things:

Aside from entering notes into the sequencer, how will I play sounds? Will they include a pop-up, on-screen keyboard?
Would they finally make it so I can use something like a KORG Micro to plug directly into the iPad? I mean, really, there's a USB plug at the bottom and side of this thing. Just make me a dongle and we're set.

  2. VERY exciting for me, but I'd be a little concerned about a few things:

How many instruments can play at once?
How many sounds come with the software?
Will the Orchester sounds be included? I use Reason a LOT for orchestral work.
    Will THOR come with it?
    How much would it cost?
Would you need, say, the 64-gig version to use it?

Now if we can only get Native Instruments to make a Reaktor for the iPad.

  4. If you think that's pretty exciting, you're gonna love this: real tablet PCs can already run Reason. Version 4.0, even. With all the features. And Ableton. And Cubase. And Reaktor and Fruity Loops and Reaper and …..

  8. There is no USB on the product. There is an iPod dock port on the bottom and i guess your confusing the volume button for another port. Get your stuff straight kid. I personally believe the only way for a peripheral to work with this is via bluetooth. Now that actually is a educated speculation.

  9. well, there's the keyboard dock accessory, and most daw's will allow the keyboard to be used as a, well, keyboard, and the iphone keyboard that ion released…i'm sure that someone will be able to make a midi controller keyboard or adapter that can be used to input notes.

  11. The Dock has all the API's for USB connection, but you need an adaptor for use. Its already known that iPhone and alike will have to comply with the European standards for Mini USB in the future (which Apple says they already do) with a mUsb to dock connector.

  13. Almost impossible to use in its current form unless you have a 20 inch touch interface, and even then its non too finger friendly.

  14. Agreed.

I would think the iPad would be better being an addon to reason to enable it. For example adding some functionality as a performance tool like Live, or maybe a sequencer matrix.

  15. I would want it even if it was a barebones version. That would even be better that most sequencing apps out now. Of course the price should be reasonable (heh)

Seriously ? ! Designing for 15-20 year old tech is exciting?? How is that, exactly?

There are plenty of of tablets out right now (w/ 21st century technology 🙂 ) that will run the latest and best of current software. I recently watched someone control a huge virtual mixing board using an HP TouchSmart (sp?) monitor and Win7. Very, Very cool it was; to quote Yoda.

  17. @kiddiechem: first of all, not a kid, Second of all, oh no! I got my ports mixed up and forgot there wasn't one on the side! Good think you spanked me on that. Thanks. But you CAN make it a USB-capable port. Line 6 is already doing something like that, and the current iPad/iPhone cable goes from port to USB. Huh, so, I guess you don't know everything. I know you could do a Bluetooth keyboard, but we (surpringly) haven't seen one of those yet. I would love such a thing though. And yes, I'm educated on such things.

Yeah, you can use a current tablet, but if you're planning on having an iPad anyway, then yahoo for this. One less device I have to carry around. God, some of you anti-iPad guys just piss me off with your negativity. Having an opinion on this thing is one thing, but to say it's just not a product anyone should buy, which is essentially what iPad nay-sayers are doing, is just stupid. DON'T BUY IT IF YOU DON'T WANT IT. It's just that simple.

  19. Yes, the UI could possibly be tweaked a bit, but all they really have to do is get Apple to allow pinch/pull so you can zoom in and out. Problem solved. And if you don't think the interface is for touching, well, I don't know what to say about that; I mean, it DOES emulate knobs already. What else would it need to do to satisfy you?

For me, the incredible lack of good music software for the iPhone (and, currently, the iPad), would make this a no-brainer. Interface I already know, a sequencer I love… what's not to like, really, as long as it's not too expensive.

  21. Since touch screens will probably be everywhere in a few years, I think they'd be wise to do this anyway. A zoomable interface would be a good start.

  23. This is a great idea! WiFi is a great way to get projects to/from the iPad (see the 99-cent GoodReader for a great implementation of the technology.)

The Slate is no different than the other thousands of failed Windows tablets that have been released.

As a 20-year Windows user, the iPad was my first Apple purchase. Yes, it's underpowered by modern standards. But the beauty of it (as a blogger mentioned) is that it's the "Disneyland of computers." A sanitized, controlled, uniform experience, that *just works*. I spend all day troubleshooting computer issues for clients, friends, and family — my gosh it's beautiful to sit down with a device that doesn't even have a visible file system! It just works. I love it.

  25. Let’s face it – this is the future regardless of whether the hardware continues to be offered most notably by Apple or other PC hardware providers. From a mobile standpoint once most users have tried a touchscreen they normally don’t want to go back to the keypad. I think this will translate back to the portable computer (iPad/Netbooks), laptop and even desktops. Everything will be touchscreen. As a result all software will adapt to make full use of the new technology. Specific to music software and of course Reason, this has to happen. It’s just a question of when.

As for me, I can’t wait for that perfect snowy/rainy morning when I grab my touchscreen computer, head off to the corner cafe and relax in front of the fireplace with headphones on!

  26. This will work if they intergrade line 6 midi mobilizer big propellerhead user and would love to see this come to life on the first gen iPad

  27. Or port reason adapted to the iPad it should work perfect import export wifi Bluetooth the works. I really wish I were a programer cause getting reason or adapted running on the iPad would be my full time job. I can't explain the feeling I get when I think of using reason any version on my iPad giving me a 3rd element of creation Sight Sound and hopefully touch. Thanks BigNightTrain

  28. would be a whole lot more exciting if they didnt have to leave out some of the features of reason 4.. so it still makes me want a computer instead of an ipad

  29. I think a simple version of Reason with a touchscreen keyboard for playing in ideas would be great. The new iPad is rumored to have a usb port

  30. that would be a brilliant thing to do. I think they'd get a huge response from the community. Maybe one of the things they can do is leave out the more sample intensive orkester library and focus on the things it's really known more for and that's electronic and dance, house music. I have an iPad and the size of it is wonderful; just right. you could use Reason on the iPad to build your base tracks, then export it to Reason. And let's face it, who could compete with the huge resource of sounds in the Reason libraries that owners of the program would be able to purchase via wi-fi like I do now on the isequence app I've been using. I bet they could even get the combinator to run well on the pad version. being able to touch and drag/copy with your finger, resize with touch…it just seems natural for Reason to be on the iPad. Please do it!!!!

  31. Real tablet pcs do not have a multitouch surface…they also don't have gyroscopes, or none of the other wonderful stuff that makes the iPad so much better…like the Mac ios

  37. i have been an avid user of reason, rebirth and rewire since reason version2.5 on osx 10.2 and i am currently running reason 5 on my MBP osx 10.6. i would love to see reason come to the ipad, however its seems like it would be even more amazing if there was a wireless midi controller to go along with it!! how cool that would be!!

  38. Propellerheads will become the Technics of muisic software. Technics was the industry standard for decades until mixing CDs became popular. Technics didn't take the initive and lead the industry in that area as the technology was evolving and now they are left in the dust.

I am an avid reason user, but companies like Intua who are already making a product called Beatmaker and another iphone app called Nanostudio are leading the way with this new market which is already becoming the new platform for music production.

If Propellerheads decides not to make a move fast I'm afraid that they will develop and price themselves right out of the picture. Cloud computing and mobile computers are not the future of music production any longer. They are the present and there are already several companies who are 10 steps ahead of propellerheads.

You know the saying … "You snooze …. you lose." That's exactly what is happening to the guys at Props. They are definitely snoozing and losing.

  44. a think this is a great idea. I also would like to see an ipad app that controls the record your running on your computer that doesnt require OSCulator or pure data.

  45. lol ! i love your style mr notes
i agree, its nothing new.. and id have no reason to replace my laptop which runs cubase and reason together fine – but could be good for the mac lovers

i'll still be pretty impressed if someone does a live sequencing set (like beardyman) using only an iPad!!

One thing i've noticed about mac users.. is that theyre too easily pleased! and don't seem to notice the limitations put in place for them.

  46. Make this happen!!! And do not mind too much about polyphony and multitimbrality, handfull is enough. Instead, aim for the best possible sound and try to achieve as many features as possible.

  47. I think it would be cool if reason stayed on your macbook or pc and the ipad or other device could be used as a controller.

You could make a program that would just be a bunch of contollers useing the touchscreen tech that could be piked up via usb like a normal contoler.

You could have an X Y graph or big nob for automation and pads and keys or a strum for inputing your cords/patterns or even just a big red record button you can press insted of haveing to have you hand on the mouse or use keybord shortcuts.

Dont realy cear what the technical barriers are to this kind of tech.

You have to look into the possibilities first then the obsticals or we will never get thier

And i also dont cear what platform you use they all have Pro/Cons.

I use both Mac and Pc.

Mac is not as usefull i find but is far more stabel and quick and easy to use .

Pc i can do more but cant get Logic and something allways seems to Crash or have some error

Anyone ken to colab email me [email protected]

  48. it would be easier for propellerhead to introduce reason into the iPad as multiple apps, where Thor is an app, subtractor is an app and so forth
once the iPad is strong enough to handle multiple app running the merger would be easier into reason as one app
