Buchla Music Easel Sound Jam

Saturday Synth Porn:  This video features sound artist Charles Cohen improvising on an extremely rare 1970’s Buchla Music Easel, one of Don Buchla’s 200 series. Buchla reportedly only manufactured 14 of these units.

The film was edited from an hour-long set of free improvisation, with audio taken directly from Cohen’s mixing board.

All of the photography and editing was produced by Alex Tyson, a sound and video artist from Pennsylvania. The film was shot in 16:9 720p using the Letus35 Extreme and a 35mm Lensbaby Composer.

  1. According to an owner of one at the AHNE fest, it is more like 45-50 of them were produced and it's sort of a little hard to tell since these were produced from modular parts. I have seen s Buchla with almost the same parts as a music easel that still wasn't one.

  2. Pretty sure Cohen built his own out of modules, at least that’s what (from memory) I read in his recent wire magazine interview.
