Trent Reznor Scoring New FaceBook Movie, The Social Network

Trent Reznor blogs at the NIN site about his work on The Social Network, ‘the movie about the founding of FaceBook”:

I was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall and spend this year experimenting around with what would become How To Destroy Angels and some new NIN.

Well, that plan didn’t work out so well.

David Fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film, The Social Network. Yeah, the movie about the founding of Facebook.

I’ve always loved David’s work, but, quite honestly, I wondered what would draw him to tell that story.

When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned.

Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.

Months later, I’m happy to tell you we’re nearing the completion of this and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.

As Atticus and I near the end of the scoring process, we’re looking forward to the next phase – distilling the large amount of music we’ve written for this down to a satisfying record (or two). The film opens Oct 1 in the US with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that.

Speaking of the film… it’s really fucking good. And dark!

Sounds like we should be seeing some new music from Reznor in the fall – and that there’s new Nine Inch Nails music in the works, too!

  1. Trent Reznor has become a joke. he uses the same limited recycled melody throughout his songs. so sad to see all that gear go to waste.

  2. i haven'y been too impressed with the last nin cd, ghosts, or his girlfriend's cd…. he used to be one of my favorite artists too…. hopefully he will go back to making unique, meticulously crafted, angry, sound-designy music… I like him more as a one-man-band…

  3. The only reason I can imagine would be that the film really is dark, has great music and sound effects and an overall atmosphere that will stay with you forever and ever and ever.
Think Blade Runner or Alien or The Shining or … Wait, those three films had fantastic/speculative subject matter. This one is based partly on facts and boring facts at that (excpet you're one of the people who at 3 o'clock in the morning at a McDonald's needs to use his phone to see whether friend X who didn't show up is online at Facebook or you're in the social sciences and take Facebook as an opportunity to get a research grant). That said: Maybe if the cinemas will take my (fake) personal info instead of money to get in I will pretend to watch it.

I for one would rather like to see a movie about Bob Moog and Don Buchla, maybe a little in the style of "Pirates of Silicon Valley". Could be interesting and the choice of music is obvious: Original compositions from back in the day plus a few new pieces by Wendy Carlos (wonder if she's available for a film scoring job).

  4. As much as I love his music, I wish Trent/NIN members would stay out of the film music world and stick to doing what they do best. The score for "The Book of Ely" butchered an an otherwise great movie with it's repetitive and badly mixed "music" (…and yes, mixing and composing for cinema is VERY different to mixing and composing for an industrial act).

  5. I still can't believe this is real. The whole idea sounds like a joke, and the trailer looks like something a high school kid made with recycled lines from other movies. I wonder if Trent is just playing a joke on us.
