DJ Template For Ableton Live & Akai APC40

This is a demo of Will Marshall’s open-source/free DJing template for Ableton Live 8 and the Akai APC40.

Marshall has this to say about his DJ template for Live:

There are many people who would love to be using them together, but don’t have a clear idea of how this might be done. The template is based originally on Tom Cosm’s DJ Megaset, but has been adapted extensively since then.

Currently the template requires the following things to run:

  1. another good sidechained reverb dj trick is to use a reverb that can freeze. freeze the reverb on a snare, stab, etc. with the key (the kick in this case) off. turn up the ‘verb volume over time. then as you wanna drop back in, turn the key back on. some macro’ed eqing turning on in the upper range of the ‘verb vol (hpf on dry signal – active in 64 to127, not 0 to 127- double mapped-with the verb vol) also helps.

    played out mixing trick, yes.

ps- not all freeze functions on reverbs sound the same. find one that suits your taste. live’s is more effective with certain damping modes off

  2. Coolest and most intuitive template I've seen. Thanks so much for 'open sourcing' it – I think I would have kept it to myself 😉

  3. I love how longtime users of ABUGTON LIVE are all abandoning ship from them! ha!
See, having a bad buggy product is catching up to them !

  4. Hey, I expect a product I purchased to be able to work. ABUGTON LIVE 8 crashes, buggy, unreliable.
So, If it worked….I would shout out praises for ABUGTON. But, until then, I'll speak my mind and the truth. And you all know I'm not the only one having problems. Don't tell me you haven't come across problems with LIVE 8. You know you have.

And don't tell me this TOM COSM has never had a crash or a bug in LIVE 8. I don't buy it.

  5. I've been performing live with Ableton Live since 2002. Live 8 is truly a disaster. I'm sending all my best thoughts toward the team that they can get this figured out…soon. Otherwise, I will be performing with Live 7 the rest of my life. Not the worst fate…but still.

  6. I've been using 8 onstage since it came out – never had a problem with it. I've had a lot less grief out of this version than any other DAW I've ever used. Live 8 on a four-year-old Macbook Pro with 2GB RAM. I'd be interested to see the specs on the machines of people who are having a problem with it.

    1. hey, iv been trying to learn ableton to use for mash up music, is there anyway you can send me some pointers to point me in the right direction… thankyou

  7. I use 8 every day… but am not crazy enough to use it as my main DAW… not enough pro features for the type of work I do… I like live for midi sequencing, sampling, sound design, and as a notepad…

yes. Live is buggy… I won't say it isn't… but bitching about it for over 6 months on a forum with nothing useful to contribute is just silly.

You want ableton to be more stable? report your bugs! think it's unfair? it is. Too freakin bad… get over yourselves and stop annoying the shit outta people.

  8. I have heard lots of bug reports with the newest versions of Ableton. I just kept my version at 8.0.8 and its been perfect.

  9. hi,

i'm using an ohm64 with native Kontrol's omC Template and would like to use some of the features you have here.

have you ever played around with the ohm64 and what would you suggest is the comparable approach for implementing this into my production flow?

  10. I must say, this is truly amazing. I''ve been producing on Ableton 8 for about 4 months now and am finally starting to learn how to perform live. This template is a lifesaver. Absolutely beautiful, intuitive interface and phenomenal effect chains that I wouldn't even think of using had it not been for you. I'm not sure why so many people are trying to diss Ableton on a post for a template but it's really not the place. Sir William, you've done an outstanding job and should be proud to know that I'll be using a variation of your template (with a trigger finger and old hercules dj console rmx) at every show I'll do. Thanks again man, cheers to generosity and a good heart.

  11. got the template up and running no prob, but I'm actually stumped on how to install the custom black background. I'm assuming the file in the Ableton DJ Template folder for the black BG is the "Dark Theme.ask"? How do I install it?

  17. its called user error – don't blame the software for your short-comings on pc/mac setup issues and lack of knowledge on how to operate the software 😉

  18. i really like this template but i also really like my pioneer djm 800 mixer for the obvious reasons of having real EQ that is more intuitive for the older school dj in me. i'm just getting started with ableton so my skills are limited – is there a way to modify the template so i can send the audio tracks to each of the 4 mixer channels on the djm 800 while maintaining the ability to use the effects that the four audio clips in ableton are sent to?

anyone know if you can do that?

  19. You've have to completely rework the FX to achieve this. If I ever get my hands on an external mixer, I might do a version that supports this.

  20. thanks for the response will. great work on the template – thanks for sharing your hard work. its much appreciated!

  21. I downloaded the updated APC control (selected in the midi section), the template, the theme, everything works. I’m not seeing exactly what I have to purchase. everything you demonstrated was free to download…. or is this a demo only video and there are others out there?

  22. Hi, i really love this whole template pack your using for Ableton/APC40. Is this a free open-source download, how can I get this sampe template? Thanks, hope to hear from you soon!

  23. Hey kids!

After a long hiatus, I’ve recently released a new version of my (unexpectedly) popular DJ Template for Ableton and the Akai APC40. It’s been a long time since the last update, so I’m posting it around the intertubes in case anyone is interested 🙂

There are two videos for the current version:
    – Walkthrough: https://vimeo.com/38630111
    – Installation instructions: https://vimeo.com/37932482

    The website is at willmarshall.me

    Enjoy!

  24. Great Template & information. Been experimenting with different templates for some time now. This is one of the best I’ve seen. I like the simplicity of it.
