Some Of The Best Theremin You’ve Ever Heard

Sunday Synth Jam: Here’s another “goodmorning theremin” performance, via fatern.

The theremin is one of the most challenging instruments in the world to play. As a result, performances, from even very experienced players, often suffer from intonation problems.

The performance, by Japanese theremin and acoustic guitar ambient duo Watafei, Saijyo Wataru (guitar) + Fatern, is one of the exceptions.

Fatern manages to not only nail all the pitches beautifully, but to make interesting use of effects and – most importantly – to play expressively.

Give it a listen and let me know what you think. Some of the best theremin playing you’ve heard?

  1. That is awesome.

She has some serious theremin face going on there during the performance rivalling that of the venerable guitar face. Further proof of the expressive element of the performance?

  2. Exceptional tecnique and expression. However, I would have liked a little less volume on her instrument and a more delicate tone. That aside, she's one of, if not the best.

  3. And she also have good taste in music, playing YMO!!:-)

(I once tried to play Happy Birthday on my Big Briar Theremin at a friends birthday party. 60 guests, everybody loved it, no one recognized the song!)

  4. The theremin is extremely sensitive to posture and mood, and smiling while playing ruins the timbre. What is really astonishing is how she plays the guitar with her feet!

  6. That's definitely one of the best theramin performances I've heard. So many either lack expression or are just enough off-pitch to be annoying. Not this one!

  7. You should definitelu check out Pamelia Kurstin.
For example here: http://goo.gl/bBs67. Her walking basslines are unsurpassed, as far as I'm concerned. Got a copy of an album by "The Kurstins" from Bob Moog himself!
