New Law Would Ban Raves in California

Raves will be banned in California, if legislation introduced Wednesday by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D- San Francisco) is passed.

Ma wants to ban the events on public property and require promoters hosting the events on private property to have a license to rave.

“Raves foster an environment that threatens the health and safety of our youth,” said Ma. She calls her bill, AB 74, “the first step toward eliminating these dangerous events.”

If Raves Are Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Have Raves

Rave promoter Jason Sperling sees things differently.

“If electronic music is criminalized, our government will succeed in alienating a generation of Californians and simply drive dance parties underground — a less regulated, less safe, less sane situation than we have today,” said Sperling.

  1. sad, sad, sad… kids will be as blasted in the nightclubs as on the raves… just muss less love on the clubs… loved the raves days…

  2. keep the raves and just fine parents whose under-age kids do stupid harmful stuff. it's mostly the parents fault anyway for not talking to their kids.

  8. Raves are so much more wholesome than nightclubs in my experience. Parties with (typically) less Alcohol, and free water. The club scene is a whole different sub-culture where intoxication and hooking up are promoted…at Raves it's about the Music and Dancing and friends.

Couldn't these politicians be doing something more useful than alienating a whole generation of youth?

  14. PAPAOH!!!!

People Against Public Acts Of Happiness.

Emotions should be saved for the home. All public acts of emotion should be baned and outlawed. It's the best way to subdue the young and keep them from changing public opinion. Nothing is worse that a bunch of happy educated people.

  20. so you get big named super celeb trance dj so-called raves and people die while demf set a new record last year and no one's died as of yet nor for that matter has anyone ever died at what most people would consider a real rave, an underground rave, a rave like back in the day . No one died at castlemorton(over 100,000 attended) looks like cali+week ass promoters+parents that did drugs themselves but can't teach their own youngins about em=death of a scene .

  26. That law is also a violation of the freedom of expression, which intern they might aswell take all music away because artists are expressing themselves when they sing there songs. last time i checked most of the music used in the "rave" scene is the basis for most hip-hop, R&B, rap and among other genres of music. Furthermore artists of this day make more money when their music is mashed up to produce remixes that are used by dj that play in clubs as well as the "rave" scene. So if they think that they have the right to ban raves, then they just need to go ahead and take away all music that is played anywhere. I am a DJ myself and i express myself through the music I play at such events and feel like this law is a stab at my personal talents.

  27. I don't want to argue, but I just need to say that this is necessary in getting our current degraded youth BACK on track to a brighter future for the rest of society.
Life isn't all about parties, and our teenagers can't understand that the world needs responsibility if we want to even maintain our stability. So Raves being banned = GOOD

  33. so you were the one that missed out huh? no one invited you and now you are angry? People have been dancing and having parties and raves for longer than you probably exist so don't come here and teach your pointless morality to others. You do what you want to do, if you don't think fun is a part of life, than so be it… but don't reflect it on others.
Stop the raves, people will go to clubs, drive around the city, get drunk, cause accidents… is that what you think is best? If you want to stop people from having any sort of fun all together, you won't be able to…

  39. Last time I checked there are more shootings and fights at regular clubs than at raves. Im a dj and have been playing at these "rave" shows for years and most of the people that come to these events are actually there to have a good time and are mostly there to support a dwindling genre of music. Do you actually know the motto for the "rave" scene. It's called PLUR which means Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. I also think that there are most important issues that our youth needs to work on than having the freedom to chose which type of music that they listen to. And the last time I checked Gangs and Serial Killers have nothing to do with associating themselves with a "rave" scene.
