Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross Nominated For Academy Award For Electronic Score To ‘The Social Network’

Trent Reznor nominated for oscar for The Social Network soundtrack

Trent Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross have been nominated for an Academy Award for their electronic score to David Fincher’s The Social Network, which is also up for seven other Oscars.

Reznor & Ross’s soundtrack is up against some strong competition:

  • Hans Zimmer for Inception;
  • A. R. Rahman for 127 Hours;
  • John Powell for How to Train Your Dragon; and
  • Alexandre Desplat for The King’s Speech.

We’re calling this right now, though.

The Academy Award for Best Soundtrack will go to Reznor & Ross. Zimmer already has an Academy Award and The Social Network soundtrack is both very effective and very different than most soundtracks.

The King’s Speech was a better movie, though.

What do you think about The Social Network getting the Academy Award nomination?

  1. Very unique, ambient, and took it from a unique direction with the use of specific instruments for various feel's. He could very well win.

    Side thought: times like these, im glad im not a violinist.

  2. The movie soundtrack gives one a trip far back into Reznor's catalog….His work on id Software's game Quake from 1996 has a very dynamic, emotional (and somewhat dark) aural experience that matches the gameplay quite well….not sure if you're familiar with it, but the music is worth a listen even without experiencing the game :-j

  3. they will probably win this, not very fair though in my opinion. There is nothing special about this soundtrack besides perhaps the first scene after the bar. But it's the gravity of the name, even here people talk about Trent already skipping atticus. Having a name is a powerfull thing !

  4. I found reznor’s music to be a bit lackluster for the movie. It didn’t have any passion to it and missing the magic of nin’s earlier stuff. But I suppose that magic has been missing for a little while now. I was disappointed he didn’t do better.

    Or maybe he was crafting a movie sound track and it had to follow the movie…?

  6. If this were Pretty Hate Machine or even Ghost(s?) 1-whateveh #, I'd say YES he deserves it. But, this soundtrack is not so special. actually…the movie is way over hyped as well. looks like the Academy is now trying to be trendy. they are finally understanding their lack of relevance with younger generations.

    award shows suck anyway.

  7. The Social Network soundtrack was like "Ghosts Lite", while Ghosts seemed like Brian Eno + Penguin Cafe Orchestra Lite.

    Still more interesting than the typical soundtrack.
