Free Creative-Commons Orchestral Sample Library – Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra

Free Orchestral Sample LIbrary

The Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is a free Creative Commons-licensed orchestral sample library in .sfz format.

While not as advanced or ambitious in scope as commercial offerings, Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra contains all the basic building blocks for creating real virtual orchestrations.

Features:

  • Sample library created from free/CC-licensed/public domain instrument samples.
  • Melodic instruments and chromatic percussion are sampled in minor 3rds. Staccato/pizzicato patches have 2x round-robin.
  • All samples have varying amounts of stage ambience, depending on their front-to-back placement, but in addition to that a good hall reverb is a must.
  • Format: sfz (stereo, 16 bit/44kHz samples).
  • Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is available to download under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 license.

The download is a .torrent file. More information at sso.mattiaswestlund.com.

  1. I'm missing the link where you can download this, so let me do the honors:

    You will need a bittorrent client to download this. Which is IMO a very fair way of doing this; that way everyone helps to share and host the files so that the original author doesn't need to worry about a massive download rate (which could end up to be quite costly).

    I haven't played with the material yet, but with gestures like these I'm always in to download and help share the stuff.

    Good show!

  7. Patch fixing lowercase sample paths in .sfz files
    https://gist.github.com/3702323

    You can grab the raw patch using below shortcut:
    http://git.io/sso-1.0-patch

    Above is useful only for operating systems having case-sensitive file paths.

    If you’re unfamiliar with patching workflow, this is how you can apply it:
    $ cd ‘/path/to/Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra/’
    $ wget –trust-server-names http://git.io/sso-1.0-patch
    $ patch -p1 <Fix-lowercase-sample-paths-in-.sfz.patch
