Sunday Synth Jam: Morton Subotnick performs live at the opening concert of Transmediale 2011.
While there has been an explosion of Buchla performance videos in the last few years, Subotnick was doing it all 40 years ago, with classics like Silver Apples Of The Moon, The Wild Bull and Until Spring. Subotnick’s work sounds as edgy and modern as it did in the 1960’s.
Performed live on stage by Subotnick, Lillevan and the Korean piano virtuoso SooJin Anjou, the piece, titled Silver Apples of the Moon Revisited, weaves together the various musical phases and techniques invented by Subotnick during his fifty years of explorative work. It draws connecting lines from the analogue past into the digital present, demonstrating the brilliant versatility and ingenuity of this outstanding artist.

Morton is such an important part of history. He helped to bridge the two competing schools together – tape music & electronic music. He guest taught when I was at NYU and the Buchla 100 he donated long ago was in the classroom. He played Silver Apples and pointed out how he had done it while the music was playing.
