traxPad iPad DJ App Review

iPad Music Software: traxPad for the iPad is a multitouch mixing app designed for the professional DJ. This video review, via Altroa, takes a look at version 1.1; the latest version is 1.2.1.

traxPad is not designed to mimic a traditional setup, but instead explores an interface designed around broad multi-touch gestures. traxPad plugs into a DJ mixer and takes the place of a turntable or CDJ – vs replacing the entire setup.

Features:

  • Instant response and high quality audio
  • Multitouch dj controls
  • Crates
  • Live audio scrubbing
  • Looping
  • Extensive library search and sorting features

If you’ve used traxPad, leave a comment with your thoughts.

traxPad is currently $29.99.

  1. I use traxpad as a bedroom DJ, and I cannot stress enough how fun it is. I'm thinking about getting a second iPad so I can do two at once. I will probably never use a CDJ again.

Recent versions are more stable and the interface just keeps improving. Basically replaced a turntable for $30.

  2. Hey Flancher. This is the developer of traxPad.

traxPad is designed to be very different from other dual-deck dj apps. It was built from the ground up to replace or complement a cdj or turntable in a professional dj setting (ie. with a mixer and headphones for cueing). As such the graphics are written in OpenGL, the audio in very low level audio APIs and the entire thing is built to be rock solid and instantly responsive so that it can be used with confidence in a club setting. In every way it was written to replace a $500-$1000 cdj or turntable and I believe it does so very well. I realize that this serves a much smaller market than the other dual-deck dj apps but I believe that for most people that want this functionality, $30 is a very good deal!

I hope that helps explain the $30 price a bit. Definitely hit me up if you buy the app and experience any issues with it or have any suggestions on how to make it better!

  3. Hey Synthhead,

I still need to make a decent video showing off the current features of traxPad but there are a few on youtube of people doing mixes with it.

This one shows off it being used with 2 iPads (a surprising number of people have purchased a second iPad solely to use with it) for dubstep mixing:

  9. Love using traxpad! I have moved from Traktor back to vinyl + traxpad for mp3's and I haven't missed the laptop at all. Beat matching (OMG people still do that?) is a joy, and nudging a track using multitouch gestures just makes so much sense. Will be an iPad 2 for sure just to use this app.

  10. Hi, will the program run in the background if I need to use itunes to make a purchase for a request or download without any interruptions? Also can it build a load after play type of funtion? Think you just put a multi genre cd in the player with tracks 1-10 play one stop, play next stop…doesnt need to automix just allow next track lineup function.

  11. Just bought TraxPad this week and found it really easy to use straight from the off. Loving the nudging and multi-touch to increase the pitch. Planning to use it out for the first time this weekend. Already makes me another iPad

    Suggested improvements.

An iTunes link up would be good or otherwise a revamped file management system giving me more control my audio files. Crates are a start but would love more flexibility.

Also, would be good if the pitch remained in it previous position when switching tracks. Most tunes I play are around the same bpm and every time a new tune is loaded it's needs re-pitching.
