3D Audio From Ordinary Speakers (Video Demo)

This video takes a look at Edgar Choueiri, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University, who has developed a way to play three-dimensional sound recordings more accurately over regular loudspeakers, such as those found in televisions and computer laptops.

The technique may one day be used to allow 3D televisions to produce lifelike sound and to help people with certain types of hearing impairments locate noises. Segments of the video above incorporate Choueri’s 3D filter to demonstrate the phenomenon.

The filter is designed to work with loudspeakers – not headphones – and can be experienced through standard computer speakers. (Make sure the right and left speakers are on the correct sides.)

I haven’t seen any longer musical demos using this technology, but this looks like it could be a great tool for electronic musicians.

This is a fantastic technological breakthrough on so many fronts that it is very difficult at once to pin-point all of those areas that will benefit from the implementation.

  15. That's the whole point, if I understood correctly: the effect is much more difficult to achieve with loudspeakers than with headphones, because of the crosstalk.

    If this works over standard speakers, why can't they post more demos?

  17. it sounds like this doesn't change how you record things or mix them, but is just an effect used at the output stage.

    I'm not sure how this would work in real life scenarios. If you had more than two speakers, like on a car stereo, wouldn't things get weird really quick?
