Haken Continuum Fingerboard Funk Jam

Sunday Synth Jam: The video on this clip isn’t great – but fingerboardist Mark Smart delivers a some pretty funky playing on the Haken Continuum.

We’re not sure  from the video, but it looks like there may even be some “synth face” involved……

When Smart isn’t getting funky, he also likes to use the Continuum to rock the Tesla coils.

Details on the setup below and in the video.

The Buick All-Stars playing at Huber’s in Champaign, Ilinois on 5-31-2008. I took some video by Mike Feldman and married it to audio from my Edirol recorder.

Mark Ginsberg – Guitar
Mark Smart – Continuum Fingerboard
Russell Clark – Bass
Gordon Kay – Drums

The Continuum is driving a Clavia Nord Modular and a 1975 ARP Axxe with a Continuum Voltage Converter (CVC) built in.

The red glow is being provided by the C.I.D. (TM) (CONTINUUM ILLUMINATION DEVICE), my high-tech creation consisting of a hollow black tube from an A-Frame keyboard stand with a slot cut in the side and red Christmas lights inside. This makes it easier to see the Continuum’s reference markings in a dark bar.

Sorry about the wrong notes…my accuracy has improved since then. 🙂

  1. I like the idea of controlling Leslie speed with pressure, but what I don't like is pitch bending an organ sound. That sounds plain wrong to me.
