  1. Nice to be reminded how bad most soft synths sound by some nice swedish hardware. Nord is swedish right? And from my distant memories of the nord lead 2, this sounds even better than the lead did.

  2. Are you kidding? I mean there's nothing wrong with this sound but I can recreate this with every halfway decent softsynth on earth.

  3. No, I'm not kidding. What softsynths can do this?

I know a few that come close, but they still don't compete with the natural dynamics and EQ curve of this nord or pretty much any other high end VA or analog synth.

  4. I have to disagree. I own Discovery and have owned and NL2, NL2X, NL3 and Nord Wave. Ive also made comparisons between them and the difference in sound between Discovery and the Nord Lead series is very different. Although its a decent emulation, Discovery still can not compare with the Lead's filter… or its DACs for that matter. Even if you can get similar sounding patches, I hate saying its a close emulation because some patches dont even translate close to the originals. A good example is the patch 44 pad in the default patch library for the NL2 and NL2X… thats just one of the patches that really shows you how different the software and hardware sound, no matter how much you "tweak". Importing the patches doesnt mean it will sound identical to a Nor Lead… all its doing is assigning CC data to each of those virtual knobs. Thats all.

  5. The argument about DACs is silly. I use an excellent outboard converter. Technically, the nord has much lower sound quality (and s:n). With sound design, you can dirty up a clean signal, but you can't always polish a turd.

Can Discovery replace a Nord for 90% of patches AND do things the 2x can't? The answer to the original poster's question? YES, Discovery can.

Will it do just as good a job? Yes, it will.

Is Discovery 2 a more powerful synth? Yes, it is.

Can the difference in sound quality between the 2 be easily fixed? Yes, it can, except with some sync and FM sounds, or sounds with very heavy modulation. For trance sounds like those in the video demo… Discovery is spot on (and can sound even bigger due to higher voice count and the different filter options).
