Free Granular Synthesizer For Mac, Windows – Texture

Free Granular Synthesizer For Mac, Windows

Giorgio Nottoli, Michelangelo Nottoli, Giovanni Costantini, Andrea Angelini, Massimiliano Todisco have released Texture 3.0, a granular synth for Mac & Windows.

Texture is based on Asyncronous Granular Synthesis, using an algorithm developed by Giorgio Nottoli [Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, Roma].

It generates a grains’ flow in which the way each grain follows the other depends on probabilistic parameters such as grain density (attack/sec), overlapping, synchronism and fade of each grain.

The spectrum generated by the synthesis could be harmonic, expanded or contracted according to the value of frequency exponent parameter; the result will be a sound texture that can change from noisy fragmented sounds, to metallic and tuneless sounds such as bells, finally to harmonic sounds similar to strings or choirs.

Texture is available both as VST or Audio Unit instrument, and each interface’s parameter is automated and can be controlled by the host; some factory presets are implemented in a combo box on the upper-left side of the interface, but user can save his own sound inside the host if needed.

An advanced and a basic interface are provided.

  1. Couldn't get the AU to work – Late 2008 Macbook Pro, OSX 10.5.8. Logic's plugin manager refused to initialise it.

  2. The VST worked fine here – 2011 Dell (forgot the model name), Windows 7 Ultimate. Ableton seemed to recognize it within a few seconds.

    Sounds pretty alright too.

  3. The AU works on my MBP (in GB). I'm running 10.6.8.

With only a few minutes, it is obvious that this thing can make some really wild and interesting sounds. I'll need to study it to see what all the controls do. It's a nice interface.

It has few presets so far, and only works monophonic mode. The interface lets you know that polyphony is not yet available– but perhaps that will be added in later versions.

    It's a nice free plug.

  4. Is there still a way to get that plugin? It looks so cool, but the link is down 🙁
