The MiND Ensemble Makes Music With Brainwaves (World Premiere)

This video captures an experimental electronic peformance by the MiND ensemble (Music in Neural Dimensions – a ‘new-media performance group’ that utilizes custom interfaces to explore the mind-machine-music connection.

Their performance is a combination of experimental electronic music, performance art and new age ideas.

Here’s what they have to say about their performance:

The traditional paradigm of creativity and art has been as following: there is an artist, a thought process, and fixed medium which reflects those thoughts, leading to the realization of the artist’s expressive vision. Neurofeedback radically shifts this paradigm.

Now there is an artist, a thought process, and a dynamic medium that actively interfaces with the very thought processes of the artist himself, a form of expression that drastically reshapes the way we conceive of the creative process. This presents a unique design problem: how can we optimize interaction within a completely intangible instrument?

The ensemble hopes to make strides towards a deeper level of understanding of this question, and a significant contribution to both the scientific and artistic communities in the form of software tools and reference material.

Give it a look and let us know what you think if their experimental new age mashup.

  1. I actually work at the U of M Video Studio in the Duderstadt Center where this was performed. Unfortunately I was busy with another production that week so I didn’t tech on this show, but we have performances like this surprisingly often. Good to see our web presence is growing! Also the tools to do this kind of thing are becoming amazingly cheap, easy to work with and powerful, but in the case of this performance a group of very talented people took things to the next level.
