DJ Mag has published their list of the Top 100 DJ’s for 2011 and David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Tiësto occupy the top three places.
Over time, it seems like this list has evolved into a contest of which DJ’s have the largest social media presence. When you’ve got 24 million followers on Facebook. like Guetta, you can dominate polls like this.
Nevertheless, the list is at least one measure of the popularity of top DJs.
Check out the list and let us know what you think. Who should be on the list and isn’t? And who on the list is overrated?

and out of that list about 25% can actually mix and about 10% can DJ according to crowd response
the age of the superstar DJ is way behind us and this is a parody of the ‘Billy big tunes’ senario where they just tracklist the same ole shit to crowds that dont really care what they’re listening too
this chart is done so they know how much silly money one can charge over another
respect to some of the old school names but i bet they’re still spinning ths same sound that they were doing over a decade ago

In this day and age, dj’ing is about as important as a 7Up commercial. I dj’ed in the late 90′s and early 2000′s and coming from that era of dj’ing/mixing, its hard to listen to a “mix” today. You’d be hard pressed to find guys who understand and appreciate the music enough or can actually PROGRAM a great set list, in order to create a mix with enough emotional impact to warrant the desire to listen to it more than once. Most djs are so caught up with the latest dj mix apps and the 10 jillion features it comes with that they lose sight of what is most important.

I disagree with the ‘ dj’ing is about as important as a 7Up commercial’ part. A lot of dj’s mix for the pure love of it, and personally I spend countless hours searching for music to create my old sound. Needless to say its not crate digging anymore, but the amount of drivel and dross out there makes the mission so much harder. As to your other comments, AMEN bro!!!
Ive been mixing bedroom dj style since the late 90′s and most people have no idea what a real ‘set’ is. Not just 10 tracks lined in a row, but something constructed to create an emotional response.
(shameless self- promotion included)

In the comments of this article: Butthurt DJ’s who sucked, so now they just complain that nobody is a ‘real’ dj anymore. Have fun being a ‘real’ dj, nobody cares. DJ’ing aside from turntablists, is about picking good music that pleases the crowd, and I don’t really care how they do it, but most of the guys on this list are pretty good at it. Most of you are just judging them based on their albums, when you have never even seen them live.

Wow, so many negative comments. Of the names I am familiar with above, I think they are great. The list has nothing to do with dj’ing in the past or commenting on the current state of dj’ing or anything like that. It’s just the list DJ Mag put together and yeah it’s probably popularity based.

Nah, most can mix basically, some mime though and charge tens of thousands of pounds for doing so. Besides, anyone can mix these days with auto bpm detecting..I would definatly say that all of them on the list do not fall into the exceptional category. It’s about the person, not the music or mixing, it’s brand name Dj superstar business, and note that most of the djs are house or trance, hardly any dubstep or dnb djs get nominated..

Sorry mate but no, mixing isnt about beat matching. Real djing is about creating an emotive sound, not just whacking 2 beats together and making sure they are in time….

True, this is the reason people give me crap about listening to electronic music, cos they think thats what Guetta et al play… when in fact what they play and produce is mindless commercial music, a very different beast.
