New App, Phaedra, Turns iPad Into 4-Channel MIDI Step Sequencer

Phaedra iPad MIDI Sequencer

Chris Randall’s Naughty Panther has released Phaedra (App Store link), a $4.99 app that turns an iPad into a 4-channel step sequencer.

Phaedra was loosely inspired by the Moon Modular 568 Quad Sequential Trigger Source. But, while the Moon Modular hardware sequencer focuses on trigger sequencing, the Phaedra sequencer has programmable note, velocity, gate time, and two MIDI CC outputs on each step.

Each bus has 32 steps maximum, and can run at several multiples of the base time. Each step has programmable note, velocity, gate time, and two MIDI CC outputs. Phaedra can either output or run from MIDI Clock.

Here’s a demo of Phaedra in action:

In this video, Phaedra is driving a DSI TETR4, a Doepfer modular synth, a Korg Monotribe, and an Eventide Space and TimeWorks. No DAW is used in the sequencing. Everything is being clocked from Phaedra.

Phaedra works with background-MIDI (OMAC) capable Apps, MIDI Network Sessions, and any CoreMidi-compatible MIDI interface.

Note: The current version of Phaedra is not compatible with the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer 1.

If you’re into modular synthesis, a Phaedra + iPad + MIDI interface combination, at around $550, offers a pretty interesting alternative to comparable hardware setups, which could run into several thousands of dollars.

Check it out and let us know what you think of Phaedra!

  1. Looks excellent! I’ve been looking at getting a hardware step sequencer but was holding out as the iPad was just asking to have something like this built for it! Time to buy a midi interface for my iPad. Any recommendations?
