Physynth Turns Your iPad Into A ‘Real Piece Of Vintage Hardware’ – WIth No MIDI

Simian Squared have released Physynth – a new software synth that ‘turns your iPad or iPad 2 into a piece of real vintage synth hardware’. So authentic, in fact, that MIDI support is missing in action!

Here’s what Simian has to say about Physynth:

Physynth by Simian2 (an amalgam of ‘physics’ and ‘synthesizer’) heralds a landmark moment in music creativity, combining cutting-edge user-created physics with an AAA quality game graphics engine for unparalleled immersion, Physynth brings traditional music applications out of the stone age and sets the bar very high for all other creativity apps to be judged.

Created as a live experimental instrument and musician’s sketchpad, Physynth enables the musician to toy with new concepts, melodies, rhythms and unexpected aural pleasures using the power of physics and experimental design in an organic, fluid manner.

Physynth features a beautiful hand-crafted real 3D music hardware with custom shaders tailored especially for iPad and iPad2, Physynth really is vintage hardware in the palm of your hand. A labour of love and effort, Simian2 have brought something that can only be experienced first-hand, into your hands.

Is Physynth ‘unparalleled’? If you’ve tried it, leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Features:

  • Four-track Soundscaping.
  • Vintage hardware design with groundbreaking 3D tilt-camera, lighting and next-gen graphics.
  • Realtime melody or rhythm over-dub.
  • Physics-triggered sample engine with useradjustable parameters.
  • A wide range of beautiful sounding instruments.
  • Realtime mixing with pan and volume control.
  • Realtime Reverb and Chorus digital special effects.

  1. I am on the fence. No MIDI or copy/paste coupled with a demo/commercial that shows nothing about the app other than beautiful people like sitting on a couch playing with a pretty UI. Maybe if they do a demo showing what the app can actually do and how it actually sounds I might grab it but it needs to be on the level with Sunrizer, Animoog, Addictive, etc.

  2. I actually bought this to give it a fair shake thinking that maybe I was missing the point or something. I wish I would have saved my money. It’s basically a generative music toy. Some people will propably like the concept of drawing in the fields and playing a key that drops a ball out and bounces around triggering notes but it just feels like stiff and forced to me. I had high hopes after seeing the ads but there is no synthesis involved. It’s just samples, a very few samples at that, being triggered in a way that is basically four boxes of Sounddrop. I have trouble understanding how they can actually call it a “synth”.

  3. What’s with the back and forth pricing on this one? First it on sale at $2.99 then down to $.99 then back up to $2.99 now reduced tonight back to $.99!

Not a great marketing strategy if you ask me.

  4. Got to cut some slack, the developers have said the pricing mix up was a mistake, two people editing the thing at the same time. And they’re sorry, and are going to extend the cheapo price through xmas to say sorry at their own cost. They’re new at it, and frankly we should not complain but ask for more features instead. I’m asking for more weird instruments like retro video game music sounds. On twitter @squaredape is willing to respond to every person who talks to him and he personally apologies. That’s not something you get from many devs.

Yes I am a fan, yes. So what? I like being treated like a human being instead of another sales statistic. Try it for yourself and talk to the developers, they seem to have time for all of us. Maybe other developers should take a leaf out of that book.
