Keith McmIllen 12 Step Foot Controller Review

Here’s a review,via sonicstate, of the Keith McmIllen 12 Step Chromatic Keyboard Foot Controller, a unique MIDI controller designed to be played with the foot, but offering an unusual range of expression for a foot pedal.

For example, the 12 Step offers:

  • 5 note polyphony;
  • Polyphonic aftertouch and pitch bend; and
  • Velocity sensitive response

Polyphonic aftertouch, especially, is rare on both controllers and keyboard synths. We’ve heard of people using these as keyboards because of this capability.

The KMI 12 Step Chromatic Keyboard Foot Controller is US $290, with a street price of about $260.

If you’ve used the 12 Step controller, let us know what you think of it!

  1. Yeah i got one and it worked great, answer to a dreàm!!! Untill the 1yr warrant ran out, then it started to flake out on me. Emailed kmi and was told a sftwr update would fix, but it didnt. 1 led button started flickering intermittantly, and went out, then another. Then I would step on a key near the select button and it fall out of the patch you were using into a completely dissimilar patch(or programming mode) completely different than the one you were using. Nope. Cant use it. Contacted kmi again(i still have the emails if you want to see them hit me up) support said nothing to be done outside of warranty except sell me another at a “slight discount”. I really cant afford another if this is the way they play.
    Some time later, i found a post online saying you cant use them on carpet! Wait, seriously? The website shows a truck running over one but you cant use it on carpet!!!! Really? Really.
    Can’t locate the post now, but i have the emails if you want see them.
