The Foundations Of Synthesis Video Tutorial Series

The Bob Moog Foundation has announced a new video series, in partnership with macProvideo.com, looking at The Foundations of Synthesis.

The Foundation of Synthesis series features BMF Education and Archive Specialist Marc Doty and cover a variety of topics, including:

  • The Synthesis of Synthesis
  • Oscillators
  • Filters
  • Control Voltage
  • Amps, Ring Modulators, S&H and more
  • Applied Synthesis

On several of the videos, synthesist Erik Norlander assists the lesson with a demonstration on his 22 oscillator Wall of Doom modular Moog synthesizer.

Here’s an intro to each of the six Foundations Of Synthesis videos:

See the MacProVideo site for details. A generous portion of the revenue generation from viewing of the tutorials goes to benefit the Bob Moog Foundation.

  1. Looks quite impressive. What also immediately struck me as professional was that although this centers around the Bob Moog foundation they’re not considering themselves to be “too special” to ignore other aspects of synthesis. For example; they’ll easily include examples from other synthesizers such as Yamaha’s and other brands (so not restricting themselves to Moog synths only). And I have to say being quite surprised to see Reason getting mentioned in there somewhere.

IMO the importance of such tutorials should never be underestimated. Because what they say about the need to know the past of a component in order to fully understand it is simply true. For example; I’ve seen it way too many times that someone was trying to build up his own synth (using either Max or Reaktor) and started wondering how to build a LFO sometimes even being surprised to learn that it starts with a ‘mere’ oscillator.
