Will The iOS 6 Update Screw Up Your Music Apps?

iOS 6 was released yesterday – and 15% of Synthtopia’s mobile readers have probably already upgraded.

If you haven’t upgraded yet, though, you may want to wait, if you use your device for mobile music making. Reader Mark Mosher reports that several apps have problems.

Based on his testing, both PPG WaveGenerator and Akai SynthStation crash under iOS, immediately after the splash screens are displayed. Mosher notes that “I’ve been in touch with Wolfgang Palm and they are aware of the problem and working on a fix.”

Most of the apps Mosher tested seemed to work just fine, including TC-11, iElectribe, iMS-2o, Lemur, Magellan, Animoog, NanoStudio and others. See Mosher’s site for the rundown on apps he tested.

If you have already upgraded to iOS 6, let us know your experiences!

  1. Can anyone with Orphion and IOS 6 comment on whether it still works? It was said that Orphion´s touch size detection was based on some hack which Apple has removed in IOS 6. True?

    1. There are some fields in the iOS 5.1 include files that made touch size available (although not encouraged for use); I’m seeing these fields gone in the includes for 6.0. Apps compiled with the 5.1 include files will work under iOS 6.0, and touch size still works on the iPhone5. In terms of hardware, it’s still possible, and there are probably some hacks to keep things going, but it’s much scarier now than it was before. I was hoping to see more formal support for touch size; instead, there seems to be less.

I’m worried about what will happen in the next few releases of iOS — touch size is a great feature for expressive playing, and Orphion uses it brilliantly.

  2. Orphion crashed once, but worked after that. Loopy just gets… well…. loopy. I froze up the pad, but the system worked again after I locekd the ipad and opened it again. But loopy still dont work.

  3. Changeling is really messed up. That one froze the sound, and kept on playing even after I closed the app (yes, fully closed). And even kept on playing after I locked the screen. I had to revoot to make it stop.

  4. ppg works ok on ipad2. as does animoog, i used it on a gig tonight
i dont like OS6 though. would recommend hold out as long as possible for going there

  5. PolyTune didn’t work for me when I first started it after the update. Closing and reopening the app solved the problem, but it definitely got me thinking twice about installing any new music apps.

  6. Working:
PPG is working fine on my ipad with iOS6
    Reactable,)
    TC-11 working fine
    Animoog
    Magellan
    Noisemusik
    Dingsaller Lite
    SoundPrims Lite
    AnaMini
    Synthastatic
    FourrierTouch
    RetroSounds
    VocalForm
    Nebula
    Petites Ondes
    DrawJong
    SSSSynth
    Space
    Space (other one call space)
    Figure

    Not working:
iYM2151 is crashing (but was crashing before)
    csGrain
    MDP-SAS-2A
    Mega Curtis

      1. please complain at sony. I complained at behringer as well. Apple doesnt care but they actually might be interested in it if their partners complainabout their products not being supported anymore.
This whole thing got so unsure that I won’t buy any apple mobile devices anymore as except making music everything else can be done with android as well.

  7. MegaCurtis and ExtraSlice won’t open in iOS 6. Haven’t tried it yet, but my guess is that Donut won’t open when I upgrade my iPad… all three are Strange Agency apps.

  8. iOS6 broke the 3DMixer Reverb used by both Core Audio an OpenAL based apps. The result is that the sound get hard-panned right when the reverb is turned on. There is no fix for the problem at this time for those of us using OpenAL for our apps, going to have to wait for Apple to fix it in a future iOS release.

  9. iOS6 broke the 3DMixer Reverb used by both Core Audio an OpenAL based apps. The result is that the sound get hard-panned right when the reverb is turned on. There is no fix for the problem at this time for those of us using OpenAL for our apps, going to have to wait for Apple to fix it in a future iOS release as there are no other new ALC_ASA extension property to allow us to tweak the underlying audio unit.

  10. It’s not only the apps that’s been screwed up after the iOS 6 update.
Music gears don’t work properly either.
The Akai Synthstation 25, line 6 midi mobilizer II, and the Tascam iU2 doesn’t work anymore. I think it’s a problem with midi processing in the iOS 6 because the Focusrite iTrack Solo, which has no midi functions, works fine. Apple better fix this soon or I’ll be ditching my plans to get the new iPhone and iPad.
