The Studio Electronics Boomstar Synth – ‘For Those Who Remember Analog Sound’

Studio Electronics shared these photos today of the first production Boomstar synthesizer – a Boomstar 4075.

Earlier in the year, SE announced a new line of four Boomstar synthesizers, each with a different style of filter:

  • 4075-classic Arp 2600
  • 5089-classic Moog 24db ladder
  • SEM-classic Oberheim 12db
  • 303-classic Roland TB.

The Boomstar synths are priced at $799. More photos and details below.

Official Description:

Back to the raw power and purity of non-programmable* discrete analog––where STUDIO ELECTRONICS started in 1985. The snap and punch of hardware envelopes drive the BOOMSTAR’s brilliant voltage controlled circuits with unparalleled sonic integrity and versatility. BOOMSTAR is the ultimate desktop analog synthesizer for those who remember and desire still, the electronic Analog sound that changed the world and for seekers who have yet to discover that magic and delight… in their time.

This new blazing brainchild of STUDIO ELECTRONICS represents the design collective ethos of circuit and software “Saseong” Tim Caswell, tactile layout and lead feature specialist Greg St. Regis, graphic and sound consultant Marc St. Regis, art design wizard of vector truth, John Greczula, cool-headed concept leader Geoff Farr and our relentless and wise feature and functionality consultant, Drew Neumann.

Four Models/Filter types: 4075-classic Arp 2600, 5089-classic Moog 24db ladder, SEM-classic Oberheim 12db, 303-classic Roland TB.

This All-American-Made music machine’s discrete voltage controlled analogoscillators, hand matched transistors in its filters and amplifiers and STUDIO ELECTRONICS’ typically expressive programming feature realizes its name: Earth Grounding Subs to Deep Field Shimmers… BOOMSTAR!

SE says it expects the Boomstar synths to ship by early November. See the SE site for details.

  1. Looks like a Mackie mixer. SE has made some decent stuff but this almost seems like a furrow too thoroughly plowed. I probably wouldn’t have a place for it, but rock on! Love seeing new stuff

  2. 799 USD for a 2 VCO synth is excellent, however when it arrives in the UK it’ll probably be 799 GBP = 1250 dollars!
All the same it’s good to see analogue synths being made again 🙂

  3. Two words: build quality.

Most synths under $500-600 have significant build quality issues, or just use tiny knobs and cramped interfaces. Clearly not an issue with these – they look like they could withstand a shotgun blast!

  4. The more I read about this the more I’m liking it. It’s a small synth at 8.7? wide x 7? high.
The Arp 2600 and Oberheim filters are the ones for me.

  5. This is really one of the ugliest synths I have ever seen. Maybe it will sound very good – but it`s a pain for my eyes!

  6. Why would anyone buy this over a subphatty, lol. The subphatty kicks the snot out of this Alan Pearsons Project, lol. Hence, the Boomstar sounds too vintage for my liking. Whereas, the subphatty has that modern sound good for music.

  7. I think that is among the so much important information for me.
And i’m happy reading your article. However want to commentary on some basic issues, The
web site taste is great, the articles is actually great
    : D. Good process, cheers
