StepSequencer ST-S01 – A Classical Step Sequencer For The iPad

Developer Matthias Schorer has released StepSequencer ST-S01 – a classical step sequencer for the iPad.

ST-S01 features two modes with either 16 steps or two x 8 steps, which are executed in parallel on two MIDI channels.

ST-S01 supports MIDI Clock, Start, Continue and Stop. Each step has an octave and note selector, as well as a switch which permits skipping a step. In MIDI clock receive mode it is possible to slow down or speed up the sequence. MIDI can be received by WIFI and through interfaces like the Line6 Midi Mobilizer.

In the demo video, you can see the Step Sequencer ST-S01 in action. The ST-S01 is controlled by internal clock. MIDI is sent to Logic Pro via a Line 6 Midi Mobilizer and a Tascam FireOne Midi / Audio interface, which is also used to record the sounds of the vintage synthesizers used.

  1. Now we just need an iPad -> Midi out connector so that this can be hooked up directly to hardware, without the need for a computer. Then these sequencing apps will really become appealing.

      1. Indeed it is, I wasn’t aware that the iRig had actual midi connectors. My bad. Anyway – that’s good to know; my eyes have been opened ;).

    1. No it isn’t, not currently anyway. The tempo control is awful and it’s impossible to set it to accurate bpms. At least, this is the case when using internal clock sends.

  2. I would love to get a Doepfer Dark Time, but that’s around £270. So this is a very good alternative, for now. Although I already have too many MIDI controllers… I even got an Octatrack, so not sure I really need this app. On the other hand, it’s just £2.49… (Phaedra also looks good, by the way, but reminds me of the OT, so it is not so appealing to me right now.)

    1. Actually, the Dark Time is more around £370. There was one on eBay the other day, that was selling around £270. Therefore my mistake, in case anyone is wondering…

    2. Im using the OT as well for most external hardware midi sequencing. Therefore, the excellent doepfer Dark Time seemed like overkill. (If u need CV, its your only true option) Phaedra+line6 mm2 has been my go to for when the OT is occupied. Another useful app for simple sequencing tasks is NordBeat. I have never tried Genome, but heard good things about it.

    3. I’m trying to get the Dark Time also. I plan on using this in the meantime with Doepfer’s Dark Energy. I have the m-audio midi uno with the camera connection kit

  3. I would be interested if it has functions like scale, and random note (in that scale).
Am I right it only controls note’s? No midi cc modulation’s?
    That’s a step back.
Personally i am more for innovation then simulation of the old.

I have high expectations for the upcoming Phaedra update…

  4. It’s in point of fact a great and useful piece of info. I’m happy that you just shared this helpful info with us. Please keep us informed like this. Thank you for sharing.
