Only thing that might afford an evolution would be the midifile, by standardizing some plugins identifications, allowing exchanges between DAWs. That might be reasonnably simple and compatible with old formats…

Surprised nothing’s been said on OSC.. I’ve found midi to be awesome over the years, but newer instruments. (hardware sensors) may call for more flexibility? Eigenharp in mind here..
