Wolfgang Palm has announced that his second software synthesizer for iOS, PPG WaveMapper, is now available.

PPG WaveMapper features a new synthesis system which maps the waveforms of a sound into a new kind of wavetable which preserves the sound characteristics better than classic Wavetable synthesis and at the same time allows for the manipulations which make WT synthesis so unique.

Here are the details.

Features:

  • New Sound map concept – create new sounds playful and experimental
  • 3 types of synthesis:
    • Classic wavetables – for the typical PPG sounds
    • Time compressed samples – more authentic sounds, allowing analysis of user samples
    • Pure samples – classic sample playback Analyzer – convert your own samples into the new format or into wavetables
  • 3 oscillators capable for totally independent sound sources
  • 90 sound resources – a huge sound palette, from real instruments to abstract wavetables
  • 4 parameter editor pages – comfortable and detailed access to all the parameters
  • 3 Noise generators, for audio and modulations
  • Ringmodulator
  • Classic 24 dB Lowpass Filter, combined with an overdrive simulation.
  • Dual amplifier, for versatile control of 2 audio signals as well as panning.
  • 13 Envelopes, for independent control of pitch, waveform, filter and noise gain and panning
  • 4 LFOs – with 5 waveforms
  • Delay/Reverb effect
  • Arpeggiator
  • Schematic touch keyboard – Build your own keyboard, with the keys you prefer for your music.
  • Powerful sound browser – sorting by category, bank management
  • Virtual and Hard-MIDI in/out – sending/receiving keys and controllers.
  • Audiobus support.
  • 10 min audio recording and Audio copy.

PPG WaveMapper is available now for $19.99 in the App Store. If you’ve used WaveMapper – let us know what you think of it!

  1. I downloaded this first thing when I woke up this morning. I got the email from Palm it was avaible and tested it out at 4am before work.
Ran through the paces for about 30 minutes.
GREAT APP. Super cool looking and sounds are amazing.
Highly recommended app. Unique and wonderful sounding.
There are some great apps avaible these days.
Animoog… TC-11….. Korg, and both Palm apps are the top of the heap for me.

    1. Thanks for sharing your first impressions. I’m looking forward to hearing from more users on this one – it seems like he’s not only introduced new synthesis options but also improved the UI over WaveGenerator.

  2. It’s another gem from Wolfgang. You can roll the simple route by staying on the first page and still come up with some awesome sounds, or you can dig deep in into the menus and even add your own .wav samples in the mix to take your sound to the next level.

You can’t go wrong with this. It’s most def a different beast from the ppg wavegenerator . With Audiobus and properly implemented Midiout the gate, you can’t lose.

  3. I’m not sure how this is less complex than Wavegenerator. I think the graphic interface is misleading people, this is super complex. The wavegenerator is easy for me, and this one requires some manual diving to really understand all the relationships.

    1. Ive had it exactly the other way around. Havent looked at the manual for mapper even once yet. Generator required that of me on a 5 min basis. Results are much more predictable on mapper, maybe im getting used to Palms interfaces? Also dev team, did i miss sonething or is there no way to set exactly the tempo of the arptor and the lfos except through midi clock? The slider wont let me input exact values.

  4. After playing around with it for most of the day, i like it. It seems sonically more limited, or focused, than the generator, but its morphing capabilities make it more fun. Kind of like an addictive synth interface, palm-style.

    1. Exactly. iConnectMIDI2+/4+ (I’m getting the 4+) + digital audio stream back to the DAW. I agree with this site when they labelled this setup a tangible VST. iConnectMIDI is what is going to put music production over the top on the iPad – hell it even charges the damn thing.

      1. I have the first one, but will be getting the second due to the audio pass thru. I was pleased when I found out about the 2 a few days after the 4. $89 is easier to digest than $250.

        1. Actually, it’s $200 minus whatever coupon or sale you can catch. I have the first one as well – got it new for $80 = steal. I want the 4 because I have two ipads and also because I want the ethernet capability.

        2. Actually, it’s $200 minus whatever coupon or sale you can catch. I have the first one as well – got it new for $80. I want the 4 because I have two ipads and also because I want the ethernet capability.

  5. Thanks for the amazing early feedback – Wolfgang reads every comment out there and takes all feedback onboard. It’s nice to know so many people have got the concept and the potential of WaveMapper so quickly.

Our current roadmap is to continue to make improvements to both this and WaveGenerator (new release soon with new requested features) and also to release a new product in the near future – again very different and somewhat smaller, you have to hand it to Wolfgang… hint, hint!

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR CONTINUED APPRECIATION OF WOLFGANG AND HIS MAGIC.

    1. I hope he’ll add more convenient ways to import samples. I assumed lessons were learned from what happened with Wavegenerator (copy/paste)
      iTunes fileshare sucks

  6. Which of the two PPG apps is best for absolute beginners to start out on? Alternatively is there a comparison chart which shows the similarities and fifferences between them?

    1. Wavemapper, no doubt. The mapping window makes it possible to easily create new sounds, even for people who never touched a synth.
In a nutshell : Wavegenerator if you want to dive deep into wavetables and draw/edit your own wavetables.
Wavemapper if you want to quickly change sounds (dragging the modules on the mapper) and import your own samples. Detailed editing of wavetables not possible.
