Yamaha Mobile Music Sequencer For iPad

Yamaha has introduced Mobile Music Sequencer – a new software sequencer for the iPad.

Mobile Music Sequencer is designed around a three-stage concept:

  • Step 1-Create phrases – You can choose from a selection of 382 preset phrases. It is also possible to use real-time recordings made using the keyboard within an application, or user phrases which have been created using piano roll input.
  • Step 2-Create sections – Combine multiple phrases together to create a section. Phrases are arranged in a vertical block and playback is turned on and off using the Section button at the bottom of the screen. The phrases can be managed as a single unit.
  • Step 3-Create Songs – Put together complete songs by pasting together sections. This is accomplished by touching the Section area and then just dragging and dropping sections into the data area.

Features:

  • Built-in software synth with 92 sounds (including 9 types of drumkit) enables faithful rendering of sequence patterns.
  • Sound editing using filters, EG, and other effects
  • Mixer function for each part
  • Effects including reverb, chorus, and variations
  • Additional phrases and sounds – Four additional voice and phrase datapacks can be purchased directly using the application. (Dance Pop, Electronic, Hip Hop, R&B)
  • File export – As well as a function for outputting standard general-purpose MIDI files, the application also includes a function for exporting files in an even easier-to-use format designed for Yamaha synths, in which characteristic sounds are specified in advance. (MOTIF XF, S90XS/S70XS, MOX6/MOX8, and MOTIF XS)
  • Mix-down – Audio mix-down of a song or a phrase and conversion of the song or the phrase to an audio file can be performed in real time.
  • Compatibility with SoundCloud – Audio files can be made compatible with SoundCloud and uploaded.

Yamaha Mobile Music Sequencer is available now for $9.99 in the App Store.

  1. Has anybody tried this one? My experience with the ipad as a sequencer has been a bit of a mixed bag. It’s nice to have something small and portable but timing and jitter has been a bit of a problem with the Genome/iRig combo so far. Of course sequencing iPad apps with virtual midi works better, but since I use mostly hardware synths I am more interested in getting the MIDI out of the iPad…

  2. i got it the first day it came out, is a very nice app, very well made and easy to operate.
unfortunately is very expensive and the sounds are very few and in app purchase for additional sounds are veri expensive too 3,99, i was going to ask back my money, but i decided to write in reviews what i think about this app and what it would make it a really killer app (it has really big potential) for now i also experienced frequent crashes.

  3. thanks for sharing your experience with it! I don’t think that it’s all that expensive, I mean, it costs 9,99, not really expensive if you compare it to the desktop world. We have just got used to the dumping prices of some iOS software. I mean it’s not a bad thing software on iOS costa little, but I think we have to keep things in perspective. I’m more than willing to spend 10€ on a good piece of software, especially if I can try it beforehand. Of course if you say that it crashes… well that makes it a lot less interesting.

    1. hi,
I understand your point of view.
When i say expensive I mean it for what it does, of corse 10 bucks is ok for a Yamaha piece of software. If you dive thru the app store you’ll find out there are softwares very well done for much less than 9,99 or free. (I got Animoog for 0,99)
just to make clear that i’m not asking software for free but this Yamaha app is overpriced 5 bucks would have been much more honest and additional pack for 0,99 would have been just perfect.
and will make buyers happy and sale more!!!

  4. I luckily haven’t had the crashes others have mentioned. I love this thing and the remix function is pretty straightforward as compared the rather useless function of it implemented in my much missed Motif ES. I have two feature requests…being able to assign each of the eight tracks to drive outboard gear & to be able to fully edit the included preset phrases (measure length and note data particularly).
Oh yeah, a fully tweak able synth engine would be stellar too!
But this thing is a dream to operate in a performance context. This is the kinda stuff I look forward to seeing in Logic X whenever it pops up. The phrase mode is what I am referring to specifically. I have read the complaints in the app review about the sounds…yeah they kinda suck…the only redeeming aspect in this is the drum sounds…they are beefy. If you treat this thing now as a performance drum sequencer…bitchin’

  5. Discchord (sp?) was kind of skeptical of this app, but if it’s like a QY sequencer for the iPad and can actually drive other instruments, it might be pretty useful.

  6. Undeniably consider that which you stated. Your favourite justification appeared to be at the internet the simplest factor to take into accout of.

I say to you, I definitely get irked even as people consider
concerns that they plainly do not realize about.
You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest as smartly as defined out the whole
thing with no need side-effects , people can take a
signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thanks

  7. Howdy, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a
lot of spam remarks? If so how do you stop it, any plugin or anything you can recommend?

I get so much lately it’s driving me insane so any assistance is very much appreciated.

  8. I have a Yamaha Rm1x and my complaint about that machine is the sound quality. I have two questions:
    1. Is this app a software version of the Rm1x?
    2. Can I transfer Rm1x (or connect the Rm1x to the iPad to record the phrases) phrases into YMM?

    Thanks

    1. this is more like the QY series or sequencers but the idea between the 2 is similar

As far as conversion you check the Yamaha site, i do know there is some for the DJX and some of their others.

You could just take the midi out of the RM1X and send into a standard sequencer, but you might need some midi filtering to clean out strange CCs that are there

  9. Very very buggy app, if you plan to sequence external synths apps through midi out or inter app, you will go mad and frustrated. Yamaha cannot expect users to only use its cheap sampled sounds and patterns. Midi bugs and inter app bugs just kill this app although it has lots of capabilities, this makes it useless. shame on Yamaha for not updating the yamaha mobile music sequencer app. shame.
