Trent Reznor Plans 2013 Nine Inch Nails Tour, ‘Reinventing’ The Band

nine-inch-nails-2013Trent Reznor has announced that he is regrouping Nine Inch Nails and planning to tour.

The new line up will featureĀ bassist Eric Avery of Jane’s Addiction, Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, Adrian Belew of King Crimson, and longtime collaborators Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin.

Here’s Reznor’s official announcement:

Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.

I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked – which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.

Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.

Nine Inch Nails last tour was unique in the world of arena rock for prominently featuring modular synthesizers, devoting a section of the show to the group’s ambient music and for its stunning visuals. In the years since the last NIN tour, Reznor has devoted much of his time to soundtrack work with a experimental electronic emphasis.

What do you think of the announcement – and the new NIN lineup?

  1. So what happened to the whole How To Destroy Angels thing? They’re not going to tour it? Or did they already? Not a huge fan of Reznor, some of his crap is so angsty it would make Morrissey blush, but I thought the How To Destroy Angels was decent….then again who knows, the aging goths who make up his main fanbase probably hated it…

  2. i am so excited. I am sure Josh Eustis will be doing some kind of duel synth stuff with Alessandro Cortini. that would make sense to me since NIN is a synth based act and it’s only ever been one dedicated synthesist. I am hoping the new material has a more Modular and synth basis than the past 3 albums. either way i am super excited!

  3. Dude. Dude. First off, Avery is a *monster* bass player that is kind of underrated. He legitimately wrote the hook for at least half of those Jane’s Addiction tunes. And then the return of my fav, Cortini? And THEN Adrian Belew? Are you trying to make my head explode Tren Reznor?

  4. Modular synths are a nice way of saying “mine’s bigger than yours”, not much more… All the sounds i loved on Pretty Hate Machine are DX7 anyway. Keep it real trent.

    1. dx7 and Minimoog and Emu
and modular based music has a different feel and sound than hardwired synths in general.
Not that they would tour with some big modular set up ( although cortini may)
then again $5k worth of modular gear with get you a lot farther than $5 in hardwired synths
both are great but they are very different

  5. oh my… finally retribution. Last I saw NIN was during the NIN/JA portion of their tour in Pittsburgh. Jane’s KILLED IT. NIN was… ok. They didn’t seem too into it at that point. Glad he’s revamped the band. Cortini dropped a hint on instagram about this a few days ago. Picture of a Nails tape and JA tape sitting next to eachother.

  6. I’ve seen Nails over 10 times. Last 3 shows were really good for what they were, nothing beats early 90s Nails. Richard Patrick days! Either way, I’m lookin forward to the new show

  7. This is great news!! A song he paired up with Dave Grohl to do is actually featured on Dave’s new documentary called “Sound City.” Gonna pick up a copy of it when it comes out tomorrow šŸ™‚ You gotta see the movie if you haven’t yet http://smarturl.it/SCtrailer
