Beatsurfing Update Adds Quantize Module, Expression Options & More

beatsurfing

Beatsurfing – an alternative MIDI control app for iOS – has been updated with MIDI-based quantization, Retina display support and more.

Here’s what’s new in version 1.1:

  • Quantize Module
    • Built-in Quantize Module with MIDI-IN synchronization:
    • Trigger your objects in a defined quantize division.
    • You can set a quantize division per individual object for complex compositions.
    • Current BPM is displayed.
  • Circle Object Enhancements
    • Notes definition for the Circle Object can be set to consecutive (as it used to be in version 1.0) but can also be toggled OFF. In which case you can freely define a note or even a chord for each step of the Circle sequence.
    • Toggle ON or OFF the auto increment for the Circle Object. This let you manually control the increment by using Behaviors for more advanced control and flexibility.
  • Better Organization
    • Backup and Organize your scenes more effectively with iTunes File sharing integration.
    • Improved experience for sharing your scenes. Open scenes seamlessly from Dropbox, Mail, other apps or a web page.
    • DEMO/Tutorial scenes get pushed automatically as they become available. We plan to push new demo scenes on a regular basis. You can see badges such as “NEW” and “UPDATED” on the scene thumbnails so you can easily see which scenes got updated or added over time.
  • Expressiveness
    • Draw bigger objects in your scenes to unlock more possibilities.
    • 4 new colors to better organize your objects in your scenes.
    • Infinite number of Behaviors per object.
    • Properties Panel automatically moves to always make sure that the selected object is visible.
    • Freely move the properties panel to your need.
    • Define the velocity for each note in all Note based Objects (for Circle, Line and Polygon)
    • Note Velocity Behavior for the Circle, Line and Polygon objects lets you change the velocity of a specified step dynamically.
    • Color Behavior let you switch the color of any objects dynamically.
    • Fader and Circle GOTO ‘X’ Behavior enhancement let you add, substract or set a value to the current control change value to create more expressive compositions.
  • General Enhancements
    • Crisp Look & Feel with Retina support.
    • Better performances which increased responsiveness of the app.
    • Subtle enhancements in various places to improve the overall experience.
    • Lots of bug fixes.
    • Fully backward compatible with scenes created with the previous versions.

Note: This version requires iOS 6.x (Unfortunately the iPad 1 is not supported anymore)

Beatsurfing is available in the App Store for US $11.99.

  1. I love this app for the wonk but was sad cuz i don’t have M4L for the quantize object or whatev. But this update takes care of that! Thanks mang.

  2. Real mixed emotions:

on one hand, Beatsurfing was one of the reasons I bought my first iPad, and this update gives us things that I had been requesting and thinking of since then but…

On the other hand, by abandoning IOS 5 as a minimum OS I can no longer access these updates on my ipad 1. I have talked with the Devs who say this is because of some of the API’s they use, but, to me, as a customer that has waited months for this, I must say , there is a strong feeling that is something like Liine Lemur canstill be compatable with IOS 5, then what we have here is just a poor choice of APIs that blocks some of their customer base from using this update.

IOS 6+ was always going tobecome more and more of a requirement for new apps, but there seems to be more and more IOS 6+ only updates coming out too, I never thought I would be going obsolete so fast. (its happened in a matter of months not 6 months to a year as I had thought).

sadtimes for people who either choose ot are forced to stick with IOS5

  3. Hi Julien,

I feel I must offer an appology for the tone of my first comment in that case, somedays my news feed gets up to the hundreds and I missed the part where you said it is something that could be looked into.

I really hope that it is something that can be addressed as I’m sure others do.

In the meantime, let me also say that I have spent the day getting to grips with the new features and I can’t wait to get my iPad 2 synced up to my midi rig and just laying down free form beats…you have got a BRILLIANT tool on your hands now. this update has some amazing features included in it.

so, thanks for your continued innovation and development and fingers crossed for a fix to the backwards compatability.

    Phill

  4. I also forgot to mention how much i enjoy the dev s own music made not just with beatsurf, but beatfader and just dig his beats.

  5. Great to finally get an update for this, but I still would love to be able to make a tiny window to name my buttons (scene launch 1,drumvolume …etc.)
