MIDImorphosis Converts Audio To MIDI

midimorphosisAudio MIDI Connect has transformed into MIDImorphosis – an audio-to-MIDI app for iOS.

Here’s what’s new in MIDImorphosis:

  • In this version, the speed and accuracy of pitch detection has been greatly improved.
  • MIDI output now supports multiple destinations, both CoreMIDI and Virtual MIDI, as well as DSMIDI Wifi.
  • Audiobus support has been added, for both input and output slots.
  • Audio can be imported or exported using audio copy and paste. The app supports off-line conversion of audio to MIDI, with MIDI files being available using the “open in” method, or through iTunes file sharing.
  • Pitch detection now supports polyphonic playing. A toggle button selected between monophonic, small intervals, and chords.

MIDImorphosis is available for US $1.99 in the App Store.

  1. Nice price. I wonder if this, along with Notion could provide a way to sing or play parts in for notation. Seems like it could be used for inputing notes into GB, but not sure if GB-to-Notion transfer is possible. Need to dabble.

  2. I’m the developer — pitch detection works best with guitar or bass; I should have better performance for vocals in an upcoming release (you need to have really stable pitch on your voice for this to work well). There’s off-line conversion of audio to MIDI, with MIDI file export — I’ve exported to Logic, Cubasis, Nanostudio, BS-16i, so I expect no trouble going into something like Notion (but give me a yell if you do have trouble!).

  3. Dear Dev,
I really appreciate the fact that you made a point to demonstrate what works well in addition to what needs special attention (playing chords, palm muting for tighter control or playing very quickly). That was the kind of honesty and transparency you rarely find in a product demo video. I just purchased it and will be ‘kicking the tires’ and trying it out here soon. Thank you!

  4. Wow, that’s almost magical. The nearest thing to a problem with it will probably be finding enough people to really lean into it creatively, like Adrian Belew. The timing is musically tight and it gives the iPad a better face where I generally think of it as still underpowered and beta-scented. I’m going to be looking for the first person who discovers a whole new dimension in their playing. It’ll be their instrument of their heart and they’ll do something with Alchemy or Animoog that will stand everyone on their ears.

  5. awesome piece of kit , tracks better than any midi guitar I have used (lots) what a bargain….yammy pacifica-midimorph-nave-aufx space = heaven.

  6. @webdoubt — The pitch tracking can handle faster playing, but the latency (about 35ms) will usually kill your timing if you listen to the playback live. The app can record, and then convert to MIDI off-line. I think we’ve done pretty well within the constraints of an iOS device, but the hardware converters are on a different level entirely.

I’ve got a Fishman TriplePlay, which is just fantastic — costs more, obviously, but I don’t want to snow anyone into thinking that the app and the hardware systems are equivalent. The Fishman has a hexaphonic pickup, so it also handles polyphony exceptionally well. The Rolands that I’ve played are also great.

  7. Works better than advertised. The developer is too modest and the demos are of people who really don’t understand the thing. This works as well or better than any system I have used…all of them, Yamaha, Roland…I am a poor guitarist and this has let me achieve a life long dream without a $2000 price tag. My computer speaks my language now. Tip. try guitar to amp sim with the arturia minimoogon on the side. try with palm mute bass riffs. Thanks a million Secret Base dude, keep up the great work.
