Korg MS-20 Mini Wood End Cheeks

David Picciuto, aka DrunkenWoodworker, customized his Korg MS-20 Mini synthesizer with custom walnut end cheeks, finished with boiled linseed oil and polyurethane:

Earlier this year Korg released a remake of their 1978 monophonic synthesizer keyboard using the exact same circuitry as the original. I was quite excited about this rerelease and ordered mine months before it’s release day. 2 days after it arrived at my door I threw away the plastic panels and created my own walnut sides. The original 1978 model also had plastic side panels but I thought I’d class mine up.

He plans to make the custom walnut sides available for $80. See his site for more photos and information.

  1. yes, very nice. I would like to see ends made of chrome!!! I never got the wood sides fetish synth people have. Is it NOT analog w/o some wood somewhere? beep.

  2. Ya! Looks sweet! Hope you sell as many as you can make.
Good idea above to have different colors of wood stain. Maybe sell
    an unstained set, too.
Someone asked for chrome. That would look ace. The MS20 would look like a Harley Davidson, and roar like one too!
Who has a 3D printer to whip out some customized orders? =)

  3. one more thing about customized MS20 minis… (i got one last week and love it. the range is huge- from silky smoooth to raspy razorblades). Just one quibble about the case- the white printing is TINY and FADED
LOOKING. Even under bright lights it is hard to read, let alone the dim
atmosphere it is usually played in. ( And my eye sight is fine). Until all
the knobs and patch points are memorized, there will be some awkward fumbling in the dark. ( but enough about my love life ????)
Seriously, tho… if someone could make an overlay for it, it would sell. Maybe magnetized cuz the case is metal. Maybe glow in the dark. Whatever… anything would be easier to read than the current printing!

Anyway, get an MS20 mini if the demos appeal to you. It has mojo to spare.

  4. I was hoping to see pics of what the mini looked like with the sides removed too….

How is the keyboard attached? I think it’d be fun to stick two in one case sharing the same keyboard.

The wood does look nice though.
