Audulus Update Lets You Create Advanced Polyphonic Modular Synth Patches

Developer Taylor Holliday has released Audulus 2.3 for iPad and Mac, updating the modular synth with new capabilities for creating polyphonic synth patches.

“Audulus is the only polyphonic modular synthesizer on iOS,” says Audulus developer Taylor Holliday. “And now with our souped-up polyphonic sub-patches in Audulus 2.3, we’re moving toward being able to express an entire polyphonic synthesizer within a sub-patch.”

In Audulus 2.3, sub-patches operate like visual groupings of nodes. This means that instead of the entire sub-patch being replicated per-voice, polyphonic connections are carried through. As a consequence, you can now have a sub-patch with monophonic input and polyphonic output (or vice versa).

Audulus is available for iPad in the App Store and Macintosh in the Mac App Store.

  1. I’m a huge fan of the polyphonic connection feature in Audulus, it’s not something I used to think about with synths, but have come to realize how critical it is. Just like guitarists geek about distortion per string on hexophonic pick-up guitars, being able to apply affects per voice on polyphonic connections in Audulus opens up tons of possibilities.

  2. I do own it on both Mac and iPad, but for some reason i just can’t get into it.
Too much tweaking instead of instant gratification I guess…
    Never less, excellent update indeed.

  3. You’re not alone. Someday I’ll be able to use it properly, but in the meantime I’ll just support a developer who I think deserves the support.

Taylor, nice Adams you have there 🙂

  4. I don’t always program modular synthesizers, but when I do, I prefer Audulus.

It took a little bit to wrap my head around how the app works, but once I got it, it all made sense. It has a lot of freedom on what you can do, but few of the limitations of real hardware (*cough*, the splitters in another app, for example, are “realistic,” but I don’t actually want that sort of realism). This patch-support update looks very cool.

  5. To me it looks like Audulus is moving roughly in the direction of becoming THE tool that sits between Max/MSP and Reaktor for day-to-day sound and FX programming work. That’s a good thing. The perfect modular construction set/programming tool has not yet been developed and we need those tools or else computer music will stagnate at some point.
